London and its history.

Anyone have any recommendations for books about the history of London? I now live in the city and would love to learn more about the history of it.

It's a good point- the museum of London near Moorgate and the sister Docklands one in Westferry are excellent and free. Set aside a day or two to do them both.

The Museum of London on London Wall is very good both to visit and to find books in. The history of Bermondsey was of most interest to me when I lived there, but any central area will have a thousand years of blood, guts, and prostitution; London is fantastic like that! The history is often written right in front of your eyes in the street names, if only you could decipher them. One I particularly enjoyed was simply a days walk around Marylebone - the history and etymology is explained on plaques up and down.

Was given a copy of this recently and it's fascinating. Lots of historical and current stuff. Highly recommended.

Rutherford has written several books all in the same format, with lots of history and a good story woven together. I've just finished New York and really enjoyed it and learnt lots about the city. Paris next.
