I know we have a sci-fi thread and these have been mention there but I wanted to kick off a specific appreciation thread for the books. I never got into the table top stuff as it was far too nerdy, even for me but I strangely I used to enjoy reading the white dwarf magazine for all the stories which lead me onto the books. Got into the books and play the Dawn of War PC games quite a bit too.

There is a LOT of output bookwise for 40k now, some of them are brilliant and I'd rate them up against a lot of other decent sci-fi, other books are decidedly less so but I find the universe they've created as a whole fascinating.

I've read the Eiesenhorn\Ravenor books which are brillinat as well as most of the other trilogies, Ultramarines, DoW, Grey Knights etc. I've also read all of the Heresy books so far.

So any love for this, what are you favourite books\characters\race from this universe and why. Also any recommendations on what to read next?

Space marine by ian Watson

Totally amazing book

Currently trying to listen to mechanicum, though finding it quite hard.

Any grey knight books you can recommend.

Yep get the Grey Knights omnibus, it has all 3 books, brilliant read.

I also found Mechanicum quite hard going, not one of the better books.

Titanicus on the other hand is brilliant if you like reading about Titant's.

The Author is Ben Counter, no religious crap, the whole Mechanicum religious thing I also find a bit wierd. The Grey Knights are basically demon hunters so you just get a whole load of Space Marine Vs Demon action. Highly recommended.

I'd second the Horus Heresy books and any Inquisition ones. The collections of short stories are also pretty good. The 40k universe is a great place to spend some time smile

Just wish the Horus Heresy would get a move on, there have been some great books in the series but also a LOT of filler. If I have to read about the Istvvan V massacre one more time....

I also prefer the HH books that focus on the Primarch's rather than run of the mill troopers. We can read about those any time but the Heresy should be about the Primarch's in their erm...prime.

Yes, I guess it does go over some bits time and again.

Another good one is Nightbringer, which I believe is the first in a series. Very good read.

The Space Wolves series are pretty good (Ragnar Blackmane written by William King) but my favourite books are the Night Lords by Aaron Dembski-Bowden.

Some of the books in 40k are truly awful, but others are incredible smile

Ciaphas Caine is my favourite series by far. The Blood Bowl books were okay and most of the Space Marines ones have been good.

Worst one I have read so far was the first Nagash book, gods that dragged on. Don't know what it was but I just couldn't get into that one.

Not read Night Lords and I think I read a couple of Ciaphas Cain books ages ago but I want to revisit them in proper order as I remember them being quite good fun.

Thanks for the tips. thumbup
