Every book i have read at some point has 3 asterix in a large gap in the text.

Some times the story continues through this without pause, other times it changes tact ( I think)

So what are they for?

I think it's to denote change of scene or passage of time. I'll check...


Right, having asked my wife, I'm correct. But apparently nowadays they prefer to set up books with one line space above and below a single asterisk, to save space, reduce issues of text sizing/line spacing in eBooks, and because it is considered to look more elegant. Bear in mind that a lot books in print now were typeset years ago.

Exactly as you say. Simply the next scene. Not so much a break in the narrative as a new chapter would be.
