Mostly, it seems, parents are demanding certain books be banned....

Huckleberry Finn

To Kill A Mockingbird

Is this just the start of the slippery slope?

And this is in schools. Surely the schools and teachers have a specific duty - no one is validating that the language used in these books is appropriate today. But surely it is important to learn what and how the world works in the late 19th century or mid-20th.

It seems plain STUPID to me to ban literature.

But - the one good thing - at least books (from decades and centuries ago) are being talked about?

Would you "ban" any particular book?

Would you ban books for children??

(It's not big, and it's not clever - as someone once stated, all too obviously)

Banning a book will make it more likely to be read.

If only there was some other method to deliver written content to people.

There are some books that should be banned as a public service favour, 50 Shades and the Twilight series for example but Huckleberry Finn? To Kill a Mockingbird? absoloutely not no.

The slippery slope does not start when they ban a book you like. It started long ago.

I don't see banning books as ever being a good thing. An appropriate library depending on age of reader - fine. Reviewing library over time for appropriateness and relevance - fine.

I previously posted this;
To Kill a Mockingbird - banned (PH topic)

Probably in line with the OPs source?

The main link being
Virginia schools ban 'To Kill a Mockingbird,' 'Huckleberry Finn' for racial slurs

I simply can't abide this kind of thing.
I'll grant you that books in schools probably need to be reasonably age and development level appropriate, but that an entire state educational system apparently removed two classic pieces of literature without consultation because of the discomfort of one parent/child?
