I don't scrap in the street/Pub, far too old for that now.

He was 17 and was merely trying to stamp his authority on the world. I probably outweighed him by a factor 2 to 1, weighing, as I do, 20 stone+ with all my body armour/kit on, and was a good 8 inches tallewr. He didn't get chance to connect with his swinging fist, but rapidly found himself on the floor. He didn't get a kicking or any of that nonsense, but he was restrained and rehandcuffed before being taken straight round to his cell.

He hasn't been charged with assault Police, he's enough to worry about with the drink drive. If he had connected with me, he would have been done for the assault as well.

It sounds like he got off lightly. Personally I think a zero tolerance approach to assualting a police officer should be taken. As you say, on this occasion he tried but failed - I just think the public need to recognise that attacking police officers is totally unacceptable. The same goes for the fire brigade, doctors, nurses, etc. Don't get me wrong, I know it's wrong to assault a random bloke in the street but I just think the kind of people I list need to have the air of untouchability about them and part of the way we can probably achieve that is through very harsh punishments.

Had fun in Poland involving a portaloo, 2 policemen, a gun being fondled and about 5 national guard in back of a blacked out people carrier and then being falsely accussed. Luckly promissed to leave the country that night - which actually turned out to be a lie because they plane was delayed for about 20 hours.

Oh, and another one last night with some idiot who thought it was Ok to kick his GF down the stairs, breaking her nose and arm.

Found him about 10 minutes later on an unlit country lane, in the rain.

Of course, by now he wanted a pop at me too. Unfortunately for him, I wasn't afraid of him like his poor GF, so he very quickly found himself on his arse.

The last time I got knocked to the floor was by......

my dad.

About 16 years ago. Apparently I was "embarassing me and your mother, and getting on my nerves". We walked out of the pub, he tapped my shoulder and planted a straight right on my jaw. Never even saw it coming. He didn't speak to me for a few days after as well.

Had a few coming togethers with idiots in pubs, but nothings ever come of it.

Caught a glimpse of a fight going on down an alleyway in Manchester where one of the perpetrators seemed to be attempting to use a gun, but no actual genuine firefight.

I suppose there must be some PHers in the forces who've had their fair share though.

Never had a genuine fight since school...
Did Taekwondo for 5-6 years when I left school.. never had to use it, and to be honest I'm happy with that..

One thing I did learn from competitions is that someone's appearance and their ability have absolutely nothing in common.. you have no idea what some people are capable of

since there seems to be a certain amount of expertise on here, some advice ....

I've always meant to do martial arts but just never really got round to it, I suppose it take a lot of dedication and committing the time has always been an issue ( I work away a lot etc). However, I'd like to do something before I'm too old (I'm 36, so maybe too old already...).

I'm not really into doing it to go round fighting in the street, but then I'd like to think nor are most people.. I'm reasonably fit, play football OK, not as supple as I was, don't really know too much about it ... what do you think, what should I go for ? What kind of things should I look out for ? I'm in Bristol if anyone has any ideas ...

Boxing would be a good start. Boxing gyms are everywhere and generally cheap. Boxers can generally defend themselves well and it doesn't take the flexibility of something that requires kicks. If you want to go the whole hog, I recommend Thai Boxing for the best combination of fitness and effectiveness.

And Why Did It Happen?

Just doing what I was paid to do!

In brief:

we were on a job, an intruder lumped a colleague and squared up to me, He was met with a swift kick in the nuts and dropped to his knees briefly, as he rose heel of the hand rammed under his chin as my right foot stamped the back of his knee and down he went. pinned him face down on the floor in an armlock as colleague held his legs.
was witnessed by several Police Officers who ran to assist and nicked him.

Not trying to stereotype but in the 70's when Bruce Lee was all the rage, everybody and his brother was a black belt at kung fu.
You would be standing in the pub and someone would say watch that bloke over there he's a black belt, you'd look over and he would be about 5 ft 3" and about 8 stone.( i am 6-1 and about 13 stone)
I boxed as an amatuer for 2 years and loved it and the self confidence it gave me was immense but the aggresion was always left at the gym.
Considering this, a few times i've seen people supposedly trained in martial arts, trying to intimidate people.
Which made me wonder why they were'nt taught self restraint.

IF you want to get fit and learn how to fight, do Thai boxing. If you want to get fit and be able to punch the air and flick your feet about, do Taekwondo.

Sorry. I don't like TKD

A quick swipe of a 'specific' muscle relaxant swiped ring with small needle does the trick - said guy falls to the floor within seconds... and then you beat the shite out of him - hehe hey I beat the reigning local boxer shitless!... (dont try this though cos if you dont prick in the right place - you're a dead man)

my younger brother does that kungfu stuff - he's been fighting at pro level europe wide for a few years now - nick is Yas, trains in luton with some ex-champion afro guy - but when he enters the tournaments, the other guys are always 10-15 years older with bulging muscle - still the 20'year old brother does me proud and knocks the living shite out of them... though he did break his freakin finger at the tournament in Italy last year and has been out for a while...

you gotta have that natural anger under tap and use it... fighting scientifically dont help - watch the Ultimate fighting and illegal underground fighting videos - you'll know what i mean - the best of martial artists have been in those rings - and they get their arses kicked in left right centre by regular streetfighters...
movies - a load of bullshite... I mean I even beat the living shite out of some 'spirit combat' multicoloured belt geeza - and I was on tequilla slammers!...

put our hardest man in the UK from luton 'Charles Bronson' with any man - and he'll flippin rip them to pieces... hehe...

Now----- the thing is with all this martial art stuff

Theres nothing like inflicting the first nut crunching,
head busting blow to ones unsuspecting opponent--so I did.

Wimpish soft tap to the door of said expert.

Door opens --and in I go-- one to the boat-- two the nuts
and down like a heap of sh!t he goes.

Made my day but I'm not proud of it

First punch up since I was at junior school --never again. until next time

This was about 8 years ago.I've now grown up

"Every martial art has something to offer. The effectiveness of it depends on the individual."

This isn't completely true, some arts ARE more effective for fighting than others. A lot depends on how it is trained. In a contest between two practicioners of equal skill/experience, my money would always be on the thai boxer/mma-er and not the tkd/wingchun/aikido-er

Happened at a Fencing tournament (but not whilst fencing, funnily enough). I had just finished a bout, and had beaten a good opponent, who was very gracious in defeat. One of his mates came up to him and said "don't worry James, you have the consolation of being white."
Reply: "Since he has the misfortune to share his skin colour with you, that seems like precious little consolation."

I agree with mungo in that all martial arts have something to offer, however, I also agree that some are more effective than others. I'm not going to go into which as that always starts an argument and there are a lot of dangerous people around.
