There are quite a few quad bikes here in Paris. Given people park on the curbs and the piles of dog poop, they may quite good sense. The one I want to try is this fully caged mini dune buggy thing I've seen parked on my street. Never seen it on the move, but it looks like it would be a hoot. It's a bit bigger than a quad bike, but not by much.

You do have to wear a helmet on all quads that are not registered as "Tractors" as mine is.

Not so Nick. Road legal 'sports quads' (as opposed to farm type) are classed as light quadracycles and registered as PLG. You don't need a crash helmet (or front numberplate) but you do need a full car driving licence.

Pointless I'm afraid - road tyres means it's competing against proper cars designed to go around corners. I have 2 quad bikes, Kawa 225 and Honda 350 neither turn on tarmac but when its icy/snowy they are absolutely the muts nuts. Short wheel base, no grip and good power to weight just makes me laugh thinking about it.

Thats the point though isnt it?? Theyre pointless! Make you laugh though.. even better than a convertible for the sunny cruise to work..

And judging by how rubbish some Essex roads are, they almost (i said almost) seem practical!

I use my Smart Roadster for the very same purpose, it out-corners most cars, is very cheap to run and car park nearly anywhere. I've also got a quad bike but can't see the point in the UK. If I lived in the Alps or somewhere with a mix or roads/tracks then I'd definitely want a road legal quad.
