That youtube video doesn't prove a thing , car speedos are out by 10% by law so ya not getting a true reading.
Car speedo's can over-read by UP TO 10%, that doesn't mean that they always do. Mine is spot on at 30mph and only 1mph out at a steady 70mph.

Sorry, but Mr confused cannot see reason, he is always right and "everyone on this forums is an idiot" Though if you can find it, you may find an answer in his book: "Mr confused's heard it said a few times so must be law"

Westcoast anyone! It was more fun than the 1st generation VTR.

The VTS had loads of grip and was a safe chuck-able and grippy little thing. The Westy had far less grip and good fun for it and yet still nippy around town. Neither were fast on the open road. I.e. for overtaking and top end, but for urban driving and with such little inertia it could catch out more powerful heavier cars at traffic lights and in tight corners. The power delivery of the VTS was very linear and loved to rev, but lacked torque for overtaking and somewhat boring where the 1.4 ,still lacking in the torque department, was that bit lighter and the gearbox ratios matched the engine superbly.

The VTS felt far stronger. Like a block of polystyrene and the high rev engine growl always made me think of a kitten trying to do an impression of a lion. The brakes were not great on either car. As for the VTR it had the grip of the VTS without the high rev fun and with the acceleration that was closer to the Westcoast and a higher insurance group. It was pretty much the choice of the wanabe VTS boys who preferred the thrill of BS’ing the local jail bate at Mcdoogles drive through “ tis better dan da VTS cuz all da mods I add done 2 it”. If you wanted cheap driving thrills you got a Westcoast. If you wanted the TOTR you brought the VTS. Simple.

My 106 Gti was nearly the best car i have ever owned(Other than my MK1 mx5). Mine had a full Peugeot sport Group N exhaust system with sports cat, and air filter and ride height adjusted, front strut brace other than that it was standard performance-wise. Absolute riot to drive and had lovely pops and crackles on over run from the exhaustbiggrin

Wish i had kept it to be honest !

You might aswell get a normal 1.4 even less weight as the west coast was 1.4 with a bodykit, the list price of a west coast was almost the same as the VTR and by the time you added the alloys it was only a few hundred of the price when new.

Looks in good nick - has got the later VTS alloys on as well?
Our Saxo was delivered with those on ( was T-reg right at the point they started doing the 15" ones ) but we asked for them to be swapped back to the soupbowls

Yes there are other 1.4 Saxo models that are just as good as the Westy to drive. The Westy had the look of the VTR/ VTS with negligible extra weight. The Westy had cheaper tax due to being below 1.5l. 2 insurance groups less than the VTR and more frugal. My point being why would you choose a VTR. Yes you would get a free set of alloys and a better looking interior, but ultimately a car that is less fun to drive.

If you want cheap fun then the Westy made much more sense. Theres less than 10BHP/ton between the Westy and mk1 VTR. There’s another 10bhp/ ton from Mk1 to Mk2 VTR. Then there’s a jump of 20bhp per ton from the most powerful VTR to the VTS. The Westcoast is lighter than the VTR , allegedly, making it quicker below 50 mph. Since the Saxo isn’t built for higher speed acceleration and more about nippy fun then the Westcoast stacks up even more, unless you want the ultimate and then the VTS fits the bill, but running costs were a lot more.

Wow - reading this thread could almost make you believe that a VTS is a fast car.
It's a relatively tunable 16V engine in a lightweight shell when compared to modern day warmhatches - What's not to like?
That's the point exactly. It's just a fun little hatch to enjoy on twisty roads. Don't think Citroen marketed it as a TVR-beater.

Steve Sutcliffe did just such a comparison on some roads but using a 106GTi ( very similar to the VTS ) against a TVR in an old Autocar article

Cheers smile Yeah mine was totally standard |(14 inch alloys)so as a sensible upgrade i went for some VTS 15's... they went straight on with no fuss and picked up a set of 4 with good rubber for £150 - bargain !

I remember the dealer phoning up a lad who was picking up his VTR at the same time as our VTS and asking if he wanted to swap to a set of 15s for free - he was thrilled
