All weather? That'll be an Ariel Atom.

Nah, only joking, make it a Caterham. At least it has a roof and doors

Have you actually been in a caterham in the wet?
Wipers make Landrover ones look awesome...

took a test drive of a Cat in the wet... proved several things...
1) we COULD get in and out with the roof up...
2) the roof doesnt leak... even when a novice puts it up
3) the wipers work
4) its warm in there
5) dont lift up the flat of the door when driving, you get a lot of spray coming in, even with clams fitted.

still want one

I really want a 7 style first car. Thats made me more confidant that it would actually be useable as an everyday car.

Although they do look really crap with the roof up...

bearing in mind wet weather driving, i would say it has to be something...
front engined - to prevent aquaplaning - bye bye porker
four wheel drive - for obvious grip reasons - bye bye caterham!
big naturally aspirated engine - no peaky turbo power please - bye bye evo...

hmmm...what does that leave... what do i drive again?!?
either that or an RS4/6!

I would, but its way WAY cheaper to buy one thats been built already. Then I can just add new seats and redo the interior for example. And it'll take to long to build one

996/7TT
EVO
Impreza
RS Audi

would all be up there, but,

having owned a big torquey 4x4 throughout the winter months I'd also count something like an X5, Cayenne or RR Sport if we are talking all weather.

A Group B rally car of some sort, as they're all road legal. I'll take the quattro S1, ta.

Wonder what the big Lambo is like in the rain - or maybe the Gallardo would be more nimble.

Evo took a Murcielago up to a ski resort in the snow on winter tyres last year.

As standard cars go, its the the 4wd 996 Turbo with 450/S upgrade bar non, for all weather. Maybe a DMS tuned 550+ version (low lag) if your including modified cars (which Evo mag said was the fastest point to point car they had every driven)

The Porsche covers ground like no other, easily soaking up the bumps with mighty grip and its torquey ease of its turbos. I have that timed bumpy B road Autocar article from a few years back, it was actually against a tuned 400+ RS, the Noble (actually it was a GTO-3R version) felt the fastest, but when they checked the times, it was the Porsche that still covered ground quicker than they even thought they were going, the Noble was the second fastest becuase it made more time up on the B road straights than the Evo.

But from a cost point of view, especially modifying, the Evo wins.

I do wonder if anyone knows what point to point means. Typically it means from A to B across country on typical damp, windy UK roads, overtaking traffic where necessary, taking real conditions into account such as poor undulating surface, weather, narrow width road sections, restricted visability etc.

The obvious answer is any car made to achieve the fastest times possible in these exact conditions: ie a rallycar. Therefore which is the fastest rallycar? Group B, I'd wager. Of those I think Stig's 850bhp RS200 as used in the 2004/5 Pike's Peak hill climb.

I agree, but realistically the Porsche is going to be a nicer place to be in the real world. A Group B car will be scarier and more fun, but it will also be incredibly noisy and uncomfortable, dodgy with reliability (especially the high powered pikes peak ones) difficult to drive for all but very experienced drivers, it will suck down special race fuel at a frightening rate and will probably need the engine rebuilt at the end of it.

Maybe only the Porsche 959 would be the most practical out of that lot.

I'll throw in the Veyron as well, it's not as large as you think, AWD and no shortage of power, should be suitably rapid.

Isn't the veyron 7 foot wide or something equally silly. If you don't have the available width to overtake then you'll be as slow as the metro plodding away in front, down many country roads.

I doubt even a narrow bodied Ruf would be as useable on the limit in poor conditions as a run of the mill Evo.

I still stand by the Pikes Peak entrants. If something else was quicker point to point, it stands to reason they would have been entered into Pikes Peak challenge. Evo magazine and Stig Blomquist both state the 850bhp short geared RS200 was the fasest a-b car ever tested.
