Unfortunately I can't seem to find Melling on the exhibitor list for Autosport International...

but then, i cant see Caterham on there either, and i believe they are exhibiting as they asked the Lotus 7 Club if they wanted some of the space on the stand to promote the club, as well as some club members cars to make up a 50 years of the 7 display.

What a sad indictment of our times that this might even be considered to be acceptable. What happened to thinking really hard and doing one's homework before making a promise? This sort of disclaimer is about as non-committal as one could be ...in which case, why waste breath making any kind of claims/promises at all?

In fairness, that disclaimer is mandated by the US' SEC. It basically says "we try our best to predict, but if we get it wrong and you invested based on what we believed originally then you can't sue us". Actually very sensible IMHO, just sad that one has to write it in order to avoid getting sued.

Ho hum, agreed, this says Caterham will be there. Looks like the Haymarket back-room boys have some work to do on the site smile Caterham are on stand 8230 (i.e. Hall 8) but the interactive map on the Autosport International site shows that stand as blank (no exhibitor name, but no "TO COME" either). Hmm

This is an interesting read

http://www.rochdaleobserver.co.uk/news/s/334/33452...

Rochdale Observer said:
Millionaire Al wants to rival Gucci and Ferrari
Ben Turner
16/ 4/2004

WHAT do Ferrari, Gucci and Harley Davidson have in common?

All are much-loved by the rich and famous. All have a certain lavish, self-indulgent pedigree. And all are world-renowned brand names.

But what they actually offer the wealthy client - cars, clothes and bikes - is quite distinct.

Now a Rochdale millionaire wants to bridge the appeal of all three with a new lifestyle range for the connoisseur.

Entrepreneur Al Melling, who has made his fortune designing engines since the 60s, has a grand vision.

He is producing luxury sports cars, motorbikes, speed boats and clothing fit for the catwalk, along with a million-and-one accessories, including leather wear, baseball caps and badges.

And emblazoned on it all will be the Rochdale coat of arms and a name, Monos, Greek for The Only One.

The project will create 60 new jobs at his company over the next two years.

He currently employs 10 people in his Mellor Street premises and another 70 in two factories in the Algarve, Portugal.

The businessman hopes this 'birth of a brand' will be his legacy long after retirement in 2007.

Mr Melling, who recently turned 60, launched the brand name at Old Trafford and already has two heavy cruiser bikes ready for the showroom floor.

But he says he will be drawing the line at watches and perfume.

"I want to leave a legacy where everything has been designed in Rochdale," he said.

"We have got to get rid of this stupid attitude in Rochdale. The Industrial Revolution started in this region."

"People need to realise what we had here, which is that we were at the forefront of engineering. We can be again."

"For years everyone has told me to move down south."

"It is something we are going to promote more. We are looking at all kinds of ways of promoting the name."

Mr Melling, designer and 'ideas' man behind the new range, believes the speciality of Monos components makes employees much more important than the machinery.

And Melling Group components, which are made all over the world, but largely assembled in Rochdale, have proved very lucrative down the years.

He estimates that they have made more than £350 billion for the likes of Ferrari, Rolls Royce and Lamborghini.

"I have always dreamt of having my own brand. I decided it was time to launch our own designer label after making all this money for other people."

"I want some of the accolades that others have got."

With two 'heavy cruiser' Monos bikes already ready for sale at £18,000 and £21,000, the plan is to maintain momentum by bringing a new product out every six to 12 months.

"Our bikes are the most beautiful you will see and not covered in plastic mouldings. They are all metal and bikes you can keep for 100 years."

Coming soon are two Monos two-seater sports cars. For £21,000, a car with a distinctive 'nostril' front and for £90,000 a top-of-the-range supercar.

"It is horrendously fast and awesomely powerful. It is also the cheapest supercar in the world."

Future plans include an old-fashioned motor boat made entirely of wood - 'beautiful like a grand piano.'

"With the boats, which have a 1930s design, I wanted to promote quality and exclusivity."

An exclusive clothing range will include items such as blouses, knitwear, cotton shirts and beach wear.

And just like Ferrari, Gucci and Harley Davidson, Mr Melling, who runs a private railway in his Rochdale garden, believes he can attract the rich and famous with his luxury collection.

"When you ride down the street on a Monos bike, people will look at you and think 'that guy is special, he has made it, he is mature, he is important'."

Unfortunately it's the way motor manufacturers work now - no secrecy, everything leaked.

In years gone by, they'd just book a stand at a show and unveil the car on press day regardless. Nowadays in order to sustain interest (and presumably attract a few backers) you have to maintain a constant press presence even if you've got nothing substantial to say.

It seems conceivable that he sold the designs to Viper Motorcycle Company or at least the engines for same, which he's credited with designing. Notice any similarities: ?

ETA: ultimately he designed a cruiser in the US Harley mould, but did it in Rochdale. He was always going to struggle selling that from there, so a tie-up with the US to get it to market was the only obvious solution.

So the jobs for Rochdale went to the US.

He's done his bit then.

That web site for Viper-Melling biles lists dealers accross the US.

But when you go to the various dealers web sites, they mention all of the bikes they sell, apart from the Viper bikes.

Has anyone from Viper-Melling actually told these people they're dealers laugh

Well Majestic Trikes (the first one I tried) are shown as a dealer and mention Viper on their site, so not all bad news for Viper...

As regards the jobs, as I said my view is that the only volume market for a bike such as the Monos was going to be the USA, and I can't see many Americans buying a classic V-twin cruiser from an overseas company. Oh and the strength of the pound since he announced his plans would have made it pretty much impossible, too.
