Thinking a bit more about Autocar today I think the best way to articulate it is like this:
If you listen to the news on Radio 1 as an example, you form an impression. That impression is of a group of 22 year old just out of college students chatting in the office about their drinking binge the night before. Then 15 minutes before the news runs they rush around scouring the Internet for 'news' stories to fill the space. Then, 2 seconds before the news program they drop a sheet of A4 onto the 26 year old news readers desk (who was more than likely a 22 year old 'reporter') who then reads it verbatim before hading back usually with a giggle to some inane DJ for 10 minutes of small talk.
You are left cold and with that knowing feeling that if you asked the newsreader or the 22 year olds in the back office about what they just aired they would know NOTHING more than they put on that sheet of A4. Most magazines seem to follow this approach and Autocar sometimes gives the same impression.
