I walked up to the Carole Nash stand at the Motor Show to get a quote for a 1999/2000 Porsche 911 GT3 and they only had the 2004 model on their database.

I've been hunting the usual suspects for insurance today. And had a bit of a shock when I tried to get a quote from Direct Line. We went though the usual questions and then they asked me:

Girl who thought brake pads were an engine mod: "why have you made the modifications to your car"
Me: "Because I might do the occasional track day:
Girl: "sorry sir if you do track days we're unable to cover you".
Me: "But your not covering me on trackdays just the usual road driving"
Girl: "doesnt matter."

Does this kind of thing happen to other people?

Ah well, I guess they just dont like my money....

Yes, to put fiancee as named driver on my insurance for a Honda Accord 2.0 (not type-r) but as she was on provisional, they refused saying the car was too powerful... Direct Line agreed and saved me about £50 a year too. Odd.

140MPH Morris Marina + 19 years old equalled only one insurance company (Adrian Flux) out of dozens rang plus £850 TPFT 18 years ago.

165MPH Kit car + 36 year old now equals dozens of insurance company plus £320 fully comp now. God I love being old and kit cars are the insurance bargain of the century! Still with Adrian Flux funnily enough.

I have never been refused by Adrian Flux although some of the quotes have been a bit steep.

Worth giving them a try.

And they (probably) won't laugh at you. Lets face it, anybody who insures a modified Morris Marina must have a very good sense of humour!

ive always used c.i.s (last 15 years) for my road car, decent price, uk call centre, decent company. no messing.

they let you put a second car on your insurance for usually a fiver a week - ive had all sorts (including a 1959 s1 bentley :-)).

ive never even bothered ringing round for quotes in 15 years. very happy with them - i just couldnt care about saving 50 or whatever, i think the extra they offer is worth it tbh.

the only thing they wont insure is a lhd import - not a bad thing really as im sure that integrale would have bankrupted me!!!!

my nice classic mini is insured with lancaster - again a very good organised company who have possibly the best (and very independant) agreed valuation dept - none of the mods done to the car where a problem.

my 'italian job' 1960's motorhome thing is insured with flux's - a bit expensive but they took the time to tailor a policy to suit the strangness of this vehicle, cant knock them really.

the worst insurance company i have ever rung by far was the n.f.u to try and get my motorhome insured.

it was all going ok....

until....

'what job do you do?'

'i work for a mailorder specalist car parts business'

'oh, im sorry, thats classed as the motor trade, we wont insure anybody who has anything what so ever to do with the motor trade!!!'

'w.t.f!, so if i worked in asda you would insure me, but because i sell car parts you wont?

'yes'

'i want to speak to a supervisor....'

'im sorry sir, this conversation has ended, we wont insure you'

click..............

pi$$ well and truley boiled!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

my insurance went down when I changed from a 3 year old M5 to a new Porsche 996 by over £200 !?!

A few years later when I had a claim on my Insurance for a Porsche the lady at the end had trouble pronouncing the amount of the payout cheque they were sending me! Needless to say I love NU direct and if I drive for the next 70 years they will only just break even.

When I was 18 I wanted to swap my 205 1.1 for a 205 1.9 gti. Car Values were identical at about 4.5K. Insurance on 1.1 @ 1.2K, insurance on 1.9 was over 5K from anyone. So I started turning the 1.1 into a 1.9 look a like! 2 years later got a punto GT Turbo which was quicker and more powerful that the 1.9 and payed 1.2K for the insurance, crazy.

Ah CIS, I found them very good. When I insured my Ginetta for the second time I tried them. After a slightly circular conversation with one lady I was put through to their kit car specialist. This bloke, who I am sure worked in a small shop in cheltenham, was great at beating every quote insight. When I called him the following year the conversation went:

him: whats your cheapest quote?
me: £280 (adrain flux)
him: (computer tapping sounds, much teeth sucking, more computer tapping sounds) um, err... I can only just match that at £181.54
me: Sorry I said 280 but thats fine!...

happy days.

Thought I might let you in on a couple of my conversations:

Me: Hi, I'd like a quote on a car
*give over all my details*
A Plan lady: Right, and the car please?
Me: 1992 Mk1 MX-5 1.6
A Plan lady: *lots of laughter*...
Me: Well?
A plan lady: Oh, wait, you're serious?

Me: *Lots of details etc about my 1.4 Puma* Can I have a fully comp quote then a TPFT quote please?
Adsa insurance man: Yes Mr southpaw, that would be £12,000 FC.
Me: *coughing and spluttering* WHAT?!? Thats 4 times the value of the car!!!
Adsa man: yes sir, £12,000, what do you think?
*Click burrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr*

Me: *quote details about my Puma*
Adrian Flux: 1.4 Ford Puma? No sir, I'm not even going to try and quote you on that
Me: But I've bought the car
Adrian Flux: Oh well, we won't insure you sir, come back when you are 19
Me: ARGH! banghead

Adam and Adam man: Sorry sir, we can't find that quote for £1295 TPFT for you, however I've put your details through again and its come back at £6,500 TPFT
Me: F**k that mate
*click burrrrrrrrrr*
hehe

My Chimaera and now my Cerbera both tens of pounds cheaper than the next nearest year on year with Direct line. £500 FC +/- £10.

Still amuse myself with people like NU
- That'll be £1640 sir, how does that compare?
- You're a bit dearer than my renewal.
- Okay I can tweak it a bit perhaps, how much over?
- About £1100.
Click brrrrrrrr.
hehe

When I swapped the MR2 for the CLK I got 2 weeks free insurance from MB, being the tight git that I am I took full advantage and waited until the last day to swap the insurance over. I phoned E-sure who told me they couldn't insure it with it being group 20 - this meant I had roughly 45 mins to get insured before I was due to go out for lunch with my folks......

When I left University and swapped an aging Ford Orion for an Alfa 156, I phoned up my existing insurer (Endsleigh), to be told:

"I've tried everything I can sir, even entering your age as 23 since your birthday is next month, but it's still coming up as £2200."

In the end Privilege made the most sense at around £900 fully comprehensive.

Top marks to the bloke at Endsleigh though, he was entirely decent (and not at all condescending) throughout and seemed well aware that the quote was over the odds - even apologising that they only really dealt with everyday cars.

It did amuse me that my Omega, in my opinion vastly easier to crash than a 156, has a cheaper like-for-like insurance premium - but I guess that's car choice versus driver risk, and repair costs, for you.

Them: Hello, xyz Insurance
Me: I'm 23 and have a TVR, will you insure me?
Them: No
Me: Thanks, bye!

Twenty different insurers and only 2 would give me a quote.

Sounds familiar, I start off with "modified imported RX7 twin turbo" before they start asking about postcode, age etc..... Reduces wasted time before being given the elbow!!

I usually spend an hour or two wasting my time trying to find cheaper quotes but nearly always end up renewing with Privilege. If you've got 4+ years NCB they're hard to beat in my experience. Not sure how much an individual's circumstances come into play but they even undercut so-called specialists like Adrian Flux by miles.

... If you go to a smaller broker (as one pretty much has to if you want trackday cover or are insuring a Porsche/TVR/etc) then I have always found the people excellent.

I would say thats true MOST of the time although about 3 years back I had a renewal quote from one of the smaller specialists on the Tuscan of over £2k - a multiple of over 3 from the previous year. They did not say No but they may as well have - reason given when I phoned them up was too many single car accidents. Got it back down to about £700 with Tesco and its been about there ever since.
