Am I the only one who 'gets' the Clio V6?

It's not about power output, or the number of seats. As petrolheads it's fantastic that Renault had the courage to make something as loony as a 3.0 V6 mid engined Clio! It's bonkers and Renault shuold be applauded for making something so different.

The critics who say its not much faster than a 172 etc... are missing the point IMO. Hopefully it will be as iconic as the original Renault 5 turbo.

At around the 27K mark, there are a lot of rally based monsters available. These provide more power, more space, better handling and more tuning potential.

Why anyone would to compromise the 2 rear seats for a mere 250hp is beyond me. . . .

Well, because of the 250 bhp at the rear wheels. As I said competition has fwd. Focus RS, Cupra R, Type R Civic, Alfa 147 V6 . . . Correct me if I'm wrong.

I wouldn't even try to compare those. The Cupra R is almost £10k cheaper and has 5 doors.

After reading the above the Clio needs a bit more pep for the same price?! Turbo it?
Put in .

Couldn't agree more when you put it like that
I've said a few times on here that I wish Honda would do a similar bold move with the Civic Type R. Can you imagine that with the NSX engine in the middle and perhaps AWD

Its a mean piece of kit to look at, but would you really want to spend that much on a Clio ?

I bought a Clio Cup last year, it cost me £11,500 new. its been modded slightly to about 190 bhp, it still has 4 seats, and is my daily drive to and from work. As for performance, it will stay with a golf R32 no problem, beat a standard Leon Cupra R or Civic type R and indeed a Boxster. Not bad for a shopping trolley really.

I heard that they had to revamp the mk1 Clio V6 not just because it handled like my grandma, but because the cup had identical performance figures, and for half the money !

However, it has to be applauded, could you imagine any other mainstream manufacturer making something anywhere near as crazy and in your face?

I think the Clio V6 is a bit more than that though. Its one of those must have cars IMHO. Evan if cheaper cars, even normal clios will get to B from A a bit quicker I would much rather have the V6 just because it is so cool.

I would take one over a Mitsubaru any day of the week this has real character and is so so different to all the main stream stuff thats out there , also you will not see one on every corner .

Its a future classic for sure , ok 250 is not really enough but it will do the job .
So you are saying a Scooby or Evo doesn't have character?
Sure it does - bags of it!
There are far more Clios out there than Imprezas for example. If you are talking about a particular model like the Clio V6, then lets compare with something like an Impreza 22B - extremely rare, different body panels, arches etc.

I hardly think that the extreme versions of the Scooby or Evo are mainstream. In my dreams perhaps

yes the mid-engined clio is fun and bonkers in quite a cool way, but a vx turbo is not exactly mainstream, for example, and imho is a better sports car for the money.

and if you look at what £27,000 will get you secondhand...

Im with Toad on this , the Japs may be faster but they are still just Saloons on steroids yes they have higher performance , so what most people are not skilled enough not use exploit this to full advantage any how , certainly not on the congested roads , Renault should be for daring to go this route.

Am I going bonkers of something, I could have sworn that someone posted the web addess for cliosport.net but when I look I cant find the post or my reply to it.
Then I do find the site on the front page is the pistonheads review of the V6 as seen below (or above dependingon your settings) how does that work then.

I LOVE IT, BUT... even if I came into big cash I still wouldn't buy a new one. I'm saving up for a 5 Turbo, and in 5 years time a MkII Clio V6 will look perfect next to it.

I love this little blighter, have done since it first arrived on the scene

Dont get me wrong, I love EVO's and STI's and the like, but yep they have no soul compared to something like this.

This thing just oozes character, and is a no comprimise sports car.

Plus this model is so much more refined and evolved than the first model in terms of engine and chassis.

Think I prefer the look of the original one, but thats a minor niggle.

Admittedly it would be nice to have it AWD, but it would have to be rear biased and with Diffs all round.

Oh and I'd whack a supercharger on it!!

If I was in the market for something like this, and it does have a certain appeal, then I think something like this would be where my cash goes....

This Clio V6 is not a 'how-do-I-spend-my-money-in-a-wise-way' car. It's a drivers car in the league of S2000, Beemers Z and Lotus Elise. The TTs and 350zs are fast but also bling (who's gonna sit in the back?). And, mind the looks, the Evo-Scooby-Skyline brigade are the cars to take the kids to school, shop and then piss a Boxter off on the way back. The hot hatch Cupra, TypeR, R32 can do the same (not) for a few euros less.
So for practical reasons you won't buy the Clio V6. But next to the daily Laguna estate it seems a good choice . . . Does the track-version have 400 bhp? Enough potenza this thingy. Next: Renault Megane with a v8 or a turbo-ed v6?

I have a Mark 1 so naturally I am biased but...

I brought because in a sea of mediocrity it stood out as an inherently flawed but nonetheless characterfull choice.

I could of chosen the easy path and gone for the default "I've got 20k ish to spend so I better buy a Scooby" but the Clio is a challenge visually and to drive.

More important than any of this is the fact that Renault should be applauded for making the thing. For a mainstream, volume manufacturer to actually have the courage to produce a completely impractical RWD, 2 seat, mid engine car is worth celebrating.

£27,000 is the sticker price for a new Mk2. You can pick up MK1 for considerably less and they are not as bad as many would have you believe.

It is also worth bearing in mind that I have had mine for 1 year, done 22000 miles, 5 trackdays but only needed one service, 2 sets of rear tyres and 1 set of font tyres. It never needs oil, has not gone through a set of brake pads yet and despite what the reviewers say I can average 30mpg on the motorway.

Is it the best handling car for £27,000 no, it's not fast either but who said buying a car was a calculated decision. I know that I have brought all of my cars with my heart i.e. an emotional response and this is somehing that the Clio provokes in some.

I've got a .pdf file on CD-ROM that was issued as part of the V6 Cup series in '99, it does contain tech specs for the racing version of the car, but they are password protected. Anyone who wants to have a go at getting into them I would be happy to e-mail a copy of the files.

It's all about character - if you want a capable car which will flatter your abilities and be the quickest thing point to point, get a Mitsubaru, if you want to have more fun between the points and have to actually learn to drive well to get the most from the car, this little beast seems to be a contender in my book.

Just got to love that car! Personally, (I think) I'd never spend the money on it, but I just love it!
(End of story!)
