So, it's confirmed.

A new team from scratch, no buyout of a current team.

It must be good to have another mainstream manufacturer part of it, mustn't it?

That and Volvo in Australian V8 touring cars again, closely followed by AMG and Toyota, it looks like a very exciting couple of years ahead in top level Motorsport.

Oz touring cars, the press.

The other one? I bumped into someone that confirmed it. (I bump into all sorts) and there may be a surprising team principle on the cards....

Should be interesting!

Yeah, right... Audi are going to show up in 3 weeks with a new car having done no testing or any pre-press announcements, or in fact having a confirmed entry from the FIA.

I'd be delighted if we had more teams, but I think you need to pick your sources better.

Bloody hell! How the Fook autocorrect changed Nissan to Toyota, I've no idea. I'm going to bed now. Next thing you know, my 'phone will be autocorrecting again and Ross Brawn will be team principle.

wink

Possible, but I'd still be surprised. VW have been off/on in F1 for some time, lack critical mass in F1 development, etc and many teams are in multi year deals - you'd want at least one customer team, just for mileage data and comparison?

I'd love it to be true, but am still sceptical. It's a high risk strategy.

So what you are saying is that Audi are going to build the infrastructure of an F1 team from scratch in 12 months. For that to happen the team principal would have to be god. And even then he'd have to defer to BCE.

I heard the rumours a good 12 months ago, think its the reason Porsche are going into LMP1 so the VAG group can release Audi into F1. Think they bored with the WEC...
With regards to a customer team before the manufacturer outfit, well Toyota went for it with a clean sheet and look where they got to...

It took Toyota 2 years to ramp up. With the new engine regs, even allowing for the fact Audi's WEC power plant uses the same principles as that for F1, there just isn't time to do that in a year. The 'rumours' are just page fillers. Audi have too much invested in WEC for the next couple of years and Bentley are focussing on GT3.

If a manufacturer are to build and design a car to start the 2015 season Audi are a good bet to do it within the timeframe. How do we know they secretly haven't been working behind the scenes for the last 12 months?
They have a massive motorsport heritage and enough resources to do so, don't think Toyota were in the same league when they decided to make that leap.

I think it is a nice aspiration, but the F1 world is too small. People with those skills moving about is too hard to hide.

Joest know how to run a sportscar, not an F1 car. Audi don't take punts and nor would they hide the fact they were entering F1...why would they bother?

And if they were, their scaling up would be common knowledge in the industry. And it's not.

But it's a damn good story to throw the scent off of Renault's problems isn't it?

Indeed it is. And not a whisper.

Btw I like your Hesketh pic. I have an original one of those in my collection along with some other period pieces.

But do they need people from F1? A rulebook and a bunch of clever designers should be enough for a benchmark, then they make an announcement such as this (potentially), draft in an ex team principal for the final design, and they then have 12 months to make a working race car.
Strip down the bare bones of an LMP1 and compare parts to an F1 car and you may see many similar design aspects.
