I don't mind the sound at all. I quite like the whistles, pops and bangs you get close up to the car and I'd imagine having the whole field running into turn one will sound good.

Like an adolescent water buffalo, farting under water.

Or, more like a Ducati Superbike from the onboard?
As the cars pass and head away they do sound just like my older Paul Smart Ducati with the DS motor.

May as well have made them diesels.
Come off it. They sound much better than the Le Mans diesel racers.

I've only seen the qualifying today but based on that it is absolutely awful, prefer my old gruff 6-pot diesel sound. Not that the diesel was particularly good, it's just that they sound so weak and agricultural and worse than a diesel.

F1 to me was always engines that are on another plane to things you see on the road, this is no different to sticking a huge turbo on a repmobile. Maybe they are better live but as I don't travel the globe watching live that is irrelevant to me. Massive own goal.

They sound like the future, I like it, if your 1.6 road car sounded somewhere near it you'd love it.

I personally prefer the sound of a Rotary engine and that's only a 1.3 :P

All jokes aside, I think the noise isn't too bad. At first I thought oh god I might just turn this off but after a while I just forgot about it. On board sounds pretty cool if not a little lazy they just seem to have too many gears meaning it all sounds laid back.

If they increased the volume a bit it would be waaaaay better.

They sound like a vibrator, left turned on, on a coffee table.

I've a vivid imagination.

On over-run (if it's still even called that) they sound exactly like my electric strimmer.

Why would it be on the coffee table?

Maybe there's a link with the new cock noses?

Anyone else feel slightly ashamed to be watching F1 this year, especially when a lady enters the room?

Hopefully in 5 years time all this crap will be consigned to Formula E and they'll find some excuse to bring back "the real thing".

Oh dear.

I've hear remote controlled boats down the lake that sound more powerful. Those Citroen Saxos the kids drive around the town sound more tasty than these. What a load of rubbish!

But rather than the usual PH rant thread where people argue about whether the new cars sound good or not, how about a thread of insulting metaphor for what these new F1 cars sound like?

Although I've only heard qualifying on the bbc,I quite like the tonal quality of the noise,it's too quiet. Hopefully a grid full of cars will solve this problem. And maybe give the trackside microphones a tweak.

To me,the 2.4 v8's noise was just a shriek, too unlike any other internal combustion engine. Give me a cosworth dfv/ferrari v12 any time.

They sound great, thanks! I was one of those optimistic of the V6Ts sounding good and I stand by it having heard them (albeit via TV). Very characterful.

Added bonus is the V6T sound doesn't seem to annoy those who hate F1 in our house, so I can watch F1 at normal volume whilst they are at home/in the same room! The high pitched squeel of the V8 really didn't come through well on TV and it was more irritating!

Talk about polarising opinion!

Hated it, dreadful noise, and just not right to be able to hear the crowd .

The interesting bits (turbos, wastegates, generators, which all sound mad) don't come through enough, although I'm sure some tweaking of the microphones will sort that out.

It'd help if they turned up the volume on the TV broadcast: I know the engines are quieter than before, but they must surely be a lot noisier than what we hear on TV: the sound gives the impression of being artificially muted.

Yes, it will be 'historic formula one' - you can watch it while others enjoy the bleeding edge engineering and technology in F1.
