After watching qualifying today, I'm not entirely convinced at the moment.

It's certainly odd listening to a commentary that's louder than the cars they're commentating on, and to me (both when driving past the cameras and on board) they sound like a highly tuned single-cylinder motocross bike. I'm reminded of the disappointment on hearing the 2002 Honda RC212V V5 MotoGP bike for the first time, where I was expecting the off-beat wail of a 990cc version of the quattro rally car but actually heard the sound of a v-twin engine.

Anyway.

Maybe the aural spectacle will improve when all the cars are on track, racing.

I dont think its too bad to be honest - maybe a bit of tinnitus in a biscuit tin, but I don't think this is full charge yet.

The sound of Formula One, to me, just needs to have a certain violence or brutality to it. Irrespective of pitch or volume. If the sound is addictive people will be drawn to it.

This is what wakes me up every morning as my alarm (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fFYqjBqNWQ0&t=0m38s) and not because it's a V12 but it just has a quality to it that makes the hairs on my neck stand up. The new turbo V6 era does not do that for me I'm afraid. Just my personal opinion!

I don't disagree, unfortunately we have to stop burning dinosaurs in such massive quantities to go round in circles now. (at least, someone said we do) frown

In terms of environmental impact why don't they just start the season in Oceania, moving across the globe progressively and end in America? Instead of pissing around going back and forth.

Its got nothing to do with environmental 'impact'.

The impact that is intended is that of building brands and achieving sales. Both car manufacturers and sponsors.

If they thought covering the cars in astro turf would achieve that, then thats what we would have.

Sorry I thought the "burning dinosaurs" comment was relating to the natural process of crude oil formation. And hence burning oil/ petrol just for the sake of driving round in circles. Maybe it's too late and I need some sleep!

They sound like they're limping back to the pits with an engine problem. Rubbish.

Nope, that still does not sound like a highly engineered V6 to me.

In fact, some road V6's sound better

I do think its good that they aren't bouncing off the limiter in top gear from half way down the straights.

Sort of get the impression looking at a lot of the dry running they did that they were all just doing race prep as a lot of the time they were using 12000rpm (if even that!). I'd like to think if (a) the weather had been good and (b) Pirelli had been a bit less conservative on tyre choice that they'd have been in the 1:26s or 27s.

That's actually quite a good comparison.
They remind me more of these two strokes

Yes, because power drops off after that, so why bother using it unless you need to hold 8th gear for an overtake, it's slower to hold the revs than to shift at 12krpm, you're not going to see cars using 15krpm and suddenly going faster, they'd be slower.

What is rather ironic is that these things are supposed to be encouraging everyone to think of the environment.

Meanwhile Bernie Ecclestone is doing deals for new F1 venues every year which involve new circuits being built all over the globe. The creation of a ton of concrete involves generating a ton of CO2. Think about that.

They still sound like hedge trimmers to me.

I'm hoping my impression changes but qualifying yesteday didn't excite me at all.

The cars sound odd and looked slow.

Imo, F1 isn't the place to be messing about with technologies like this.
It should be a temple to the internal combustion engine and bloody quick cars so give them some serious cubes and long lasting sticky tyres that the drivers can really lean. I'm getting too old I think.

I was trackside today, they sounded very uninspiring. The Mercedes safety car had better exhaust notes. If you've ever been to an A1GP race they sounded similar to this. Takes a lot from the sport IMO.

You definitely don't need earplugs anymore, they are really that quiet.

OH dear, it really is as bad as I thought, a real loss for motor sport as F1 was the last bastion of real noise as most of the other formulae have had bloody silencers for years, better take the recorder to Le Mans this year for the 458s corvettes etc

I tuned in to watch the race but I think I found a Formula Ford race instead. Several cars burbling along in a procession with the odd one flying off and the usual retirements of course. Then a load of unknown drivers - does Rosberg have a brother in Formula Ford? The cars seem to have come on a bit since I last watched Formula Ford - wider tyres etc., but the racing was not up to usual FF standards. They even gave the cup to another German so I had to sit through THAT national anthem again!

To be honest there are a couple of kids riding 125 Trials bikes round the hills near me and they sound a lot better than the things I saw on the track. And a neighbour has an old Ducati - and THAT sounds better as well.

Anyone know what time the real F1 cars are on?

This thread is a good list of folks who cannot cope with change.

I am afraid good people, that change is enevitable.
