F1 sounds crap
Discussion
I read a very interesting interview with Luca Cordero di Montezemolo in Top Gear Magazine. When quizzed on the current state of affairs in F1, he replied that he was not in favour of 4 cylinder engines. He thought having to conserve fuel & thus not to be able to run flat out all the time was ridiculous & that he wanted to bring back pit stop re-fuelling. He suggested that there should be a separate 'Hybrid' formula/class outside of F1. His really telling remarks were saying that F1 is currently like Italy without pasta.........

Luca, like Bernie, has a vested interest in knocking F1. Esp as Mercedes have an advantage. I would take his comments with a pinch of salt...Good article, even for Top Gear magazine.
I totally agree there are probably multiple vested interests from Ferrari HQ, Mr Ecclestone et-al, & also that I have probably mis-quoted some of the article (read it last night & tried to remember salient bits for PH this morning - sorry....) But the comments by Montezemolo concerning the soul of F1 struck a chord with me & doubtless many others.

This is it in a nutshell for me. Current F1 is dead in the water AFAIC.

I'm intrigued to see how many peope turn up to a live event next year, and how many, like me, have finally given up on F1 in terms of following it closely and attending events.
In the past I'd never miss a race. Now I'm glad when only the highlights are shown, that's really all it deserves these days.

I've actually quite liked the sound when hearing the cars going around a built up area, vis-a-vis Monaco. I always thought they were meant to be turbo straight fours, but have only recently discovered they are actually V6 turbos.
But for TV they've boosted up all the onboard and trackside audio feeds. They are extra microphones all over the tracks now. Before you wouldn't even notice them - now they're all over the place.
It's not a bad sound but it's just too quiet. I'm not in Monaco this year but I'll be interested to hear from people that have been there what it really sounds like vs GP2 or even the Supercup cars.
I don't think anyone disagrees that the cars are rather quiet. And, for sure, it is a very different sound to what we have been used to. But I still say that there is an aural richness that has been missing in the past. Yes, the 2014 cars don't get the hairs on my neck standing up the way the old V12s and V10s did, but I would take them over the shrill one-dimensionality of the V8s any day.
Anyway, the fact of the matter is that this is what we have now (for this season at least). So plus ca change and all that.

I heard them today in the "flesh" at Monaco and was in complete shock, I really liked the mechanical sound of the engines, they don't scream or howl but they sound angry!
Interestingly I did get to lap 22 with putting my earplugs in where as before they would have been straight in, tha cars were passing me about 20ft away!
Imagine an angry 7 or 9 cylinder engine with some turbo whistle, that's how they spund to me!
I reckon on a big open circuit they will be very quiet
