F1 sounds crap

I don't think F1 is perfect, by a long shot. But I also recognise that it is a sport; a bit of entertainment. I don't pretend that as a "fan" that contributes nothing more than my time, I have more say in how the sport should be organised and run than the companies that have invested billions into it over the years, no more than I would expect to have a say in the plot of Eastenders if I decided to watch that.
I focus on and ENJOY the bits I like and ignore as much as possible the bits I don't like and can't change.

Nicely put, sir.
Just got back from Red Bull Ring. Exellent race and track, but F1 needs to do something and quick about the crap sound from the cars. Usually do 4 or 5 GP a year, but no more for me until this is sorted, bzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.

Oh dear.
I've hear remote controlled boats down the lake that sound more powerful. Those Citroen Saxos the kids drive around the town sound more tasty than these. What a load of rubbish!
But rather than the usual PH rant thread where people argue about whether the new cars sound good or not, how about a thread of insulting metaphor for what these new F1 cars sound like?

I liked the new cars and the sound. I prefer them to the old V8s.

You joined PH just to say this? I also am just back from Red Bull Ring and have to say an excellent 1st post from Spannerz57 and one I have to unfortunatley agree with. The TV helicopter was louder and had a better note than the cars!
I've been to GPs abroad with the same group for over 10 years...we talked about trying MotoGP next year as we travelled back from the race.
I'll be at Silverstone next race and can imagine continuing with that race ad infinitum as love the camping/atmosphere etc but agree something needs to be done, just doesn't sound like F1.
It really was a huge let down having thought I'd got used to it through watching the races so far on TV.

Its not just the sound LH and NR are clearly doing a lot of laps nursing the car, saving fuel tyres brakes and lots of other cr@p going on, its of no real interest to me Tito volf saying LH could not win from 9th, he was 4th one place behind NR on lap 2,, this means thev race aint worth watching, is he really that stupid, well yea they got rid of RB
The problem is, with all the energy they're capturing with the Turbo what energy is left normally comes out the back of the car as the noise. With so little energy there's not much noise. Unless there's a dramatic (and exceedingly costly) change in engine regulations (which won't happen any time soon after the 100's of millions spent by Mercedes, Renault and Ferrari) we're going to be stuck with it. I don't mind it, but then I don't go to the GP's. I like hearing tyre squirm and hearing rather than just seeing lockups.

Ive decided to go to Friday practice at Silverstone to hear them for myself.
I shall report back.
Looking forward to your report I shall report back.
Firstly, lets get the volume out of the way, its fine and about right. My 2 yr old daughter did not need to use the pink ear defenders I bought her! You can actually here the tyres squealing now which is great and the amount of traction being broken under acceleration was quite surprising.
Ok, so the sound itself. Its important to understand that there are many elements to the sound. There is a constant whining/whistling sound (no, not me!) which I guess is the regenerative process. There is something visibly going on under braking which is hard to explain, but it doesn't look natural. I am aware that the drivers are compromising their braking technique in terms of ultimate speed and are prioritising a style that recovers the most energy.
In terms of the engine sound, from low revs its a raspy, distorted and harsh sound, but this clears as the revs rise and then the sound is more electrical sounding to me. And yes at higher revs it IS too quiet with little of interest to speak of.
I can accept it but the thrilling sound has gone. The old Red Bull in the parade laps just amplified my feelings.

Thanks for posting and sharing.
The tyres squealing are fine IMO, nothing like hearing the sound of rubber on the track race car, so that’s a positive. As for the other sounds it’s all of that electronic wizardry, interesting for those who are interested in the technology; personally I still prefer more cubic inches and more cylinders, but I’m a dinosaur.
But the new engines do bring a new dimension to things, and we have to live them now as a fact of life even though, as you (rightly) say, the “thrill has gone”.
GP2 sounds better
On the positive side of things at least now I have an excuse to take my 2 year old daughter to races, using your evidence to counter the mrs’s objections about the noise
I just wish we’d get our race back over here …..
You seem to be enjoying it so far, hope the weather holds out. and a lot of this
