In my eyes, he seems to be quite a fast driver but utterly stupid with it? He seems to have zero common sense or intelligence. Or, if he has, he certainly doesn't seem to use either!
He's definitely got some pace.. but IMHO his pace is nothing special and certainly not enough to make up for his failings elsewhere. Surely the money can be the only thing keeping him in the sport these days - compare with say Grosjean when he had his crashtacular season the other year he sorted himself out and improved on the bits of his "game" that were letting him down, Maldonado conversely has openly refused to alter his approach or driving style so I doubt any team principal in the paddock is sitting there thinking that he can change/grow. They just have to accept that if they want/need his money you have to take the negatives.

Unlike probably the majority of fans I accept the necessity of pay drivers in the sport and I don't really have a problem with the concept of someone bringing a load of money in as a way of getting their foot in the door with the idea being that they can then prove themselves a worthy proposition should the money dry up, regardless of how they got that backing (family, country, whatever). The idea of someone continuing in that vein and using the money as a get out of jail free card year after year leaves a bad taste in my mouth to be honest. Looking at it from another angle I believe that Alonso was bringing a good wedge of Santander money to Ferrari but that is based on the fact that Santander wanted to be associated with his talent and track record, that doesn't make him a "pay driver" in the same way - it's just good old fashioned sponsorship. If he didn't bring that sort of interest then you'd probably reasonably expect that talent alone would still make him desirable to many teams they just wouldn't be able to pay him as well. Take away PDVSA and I'd be very, very surprised if anyone would hire Maldonado.

Just seen this on Twitter, was in response to tag creating a Senna hologram. laugh

@PitlaneWB: NEWS: Lotus call TAGHeuer and ask for a Maldonado hologram so instead of crashing he just goes straight through other drivers and walls. #F1

Probably a bit of respect due for Pastor in Austria this afternoon. Some of his car control was, well, 'not of this planet'.

Although other drivers wouldn't have had to in the first place.

Was it luck or skill? Just looked from the on-board like he just sawed wildly at the wheel (don't blame him mind). And if he moved so aggressively with the wing open...... It wasn't a good bit of driving to get into trouble in the first place.

Everytime he came up behind another car he looked out of control. This week he got away with it.

Its a good point this. As fans, most of us like seeing the cars on the edge or crossed up. It looks like the drivers are talented and really trying.

And yet, the best drivers have everything under their control and make it look easy. But this is not entertaining is it!

He's driving well lately. Right now him and his money are looking like quite a good deal for Lotus... Let's hope the team's improved performances will pay dividends in sponsor interest and allow Lotus to ditch him for someone more deserving.

Which team could the Maldonado fund save next? Williams, Lotus then... Force India? Sauber? Manor?

I noticed that Lotus' announcement of Jolyon Palmer's further FP1 drives stated he would take over Grosjean's car in every instance. No doubt that's Pastor's money talking to ensure he doesn't have to give up his own car.

Maldanado has a clause in his contract that he has to drive in every F1 session.

Grosjean still has a place in F1 but it'll be in the upper mid field unfortunately. He stuck around too long with Lotus.

Not sure where else he could have gone to be honest?

Similar position to Hulkenberg.

I think Bottas might determine Hulkenberg's next move tbh

One could argue that he did a better job of controlling his tank slapper(s) than Kimi Raikonnen did.

All credit he showed some good control out on track in Austria.. showing that he does have some talent behind the wheel, of course he then has to remind us all that he's a bit of an arse by having a pop at Verstappen's driving rolleyes
