Ladies and gents,

A small group of us have recently booked for the GP weekend in September and are after any advice, recommendations, things to do/not to do.

We've all travelled to Singapore before but not GP weekend so advice specifically related to that would be much appreciated.

Thanks again.

I have absolutely no idea why/how there is a red angry face next to the topic title so I can only apologise for that.

Mrs Guinness and I went last year for my 40th. We stayed on European time for the whole trip, drank altogether too much Heineken and sweated lots. We had seats in the grandstand opposite the start line for free practice and qualy, with a walkabout ticket for the race. Stood in a stand on the last corner, to be able to see the back of the grid, anyone diving into the pits and the approach to the last corner. Had the added advantage of a sea breeze.

Specific advice, avoid using taxi's, the traffic is almost grid locked when the roads are closed. The metro is air conditioned and they run more trains to cope with the numbers at the race. We occasionally struggled to find restaurants that would serve us dinner in the middle of the night.

Stock up on a few bottles of water towards the end of the race, it's a long hot walk from the pit straight along the track to the main stage.

Have a mutton wrap from the catering stands underneath the main stand. Nice!

Visit Chinatown if you can. We drank on Club Street which was great and very lively.

Bookmarked with interest, I'll be going to Singapore '14 too. Having a tough time deciding what ticket to buy. Don't know whether to go for a cheaper walkabout ticket or pay much more for a grandstand. I suppose the key to walkabout is getting there early in order to get a good spot?

It's not a good circuit for viewing without a grandstand seat. Flat with most of the decent viewing areas occupied by...grandstands.

Probably too late now, but your group could've done what we did last time I was out there - we hired a suite at the Fullerton overlooking the circuit. Gave a great view of the Anderson bridge and corners leading to and from that location. Also allowed us access to the terrace above Forlino too (including as much Moet as you wanted). Works out good vfm per person for a decent sized group, especially as we brought our own champagne.

I've had grandstand seats before and sadly it seems that no matter where you are, you only ever see a small amount of the track. Oh and it's still bloody hot at night - you won't want to walk too far.

Things to do...depends on what you're into - some very exclusive clubs there, Equinox is less exclusive but has a great view (on top of Swissotel) and shopping is good. Jurong Bird Gardens is fun too - a taxi ride out of town but fun. Marina Bay Sands is meant to be worth the trip - I haven't bothered...

I went in 2011 so not sure how much is still relevant but I'd echo you should get a Grandstand and be prepared to walk a lot and get hot, all part of the appeal though IMHO and makes the cold Tiger beer all the more refreshing.

Away from the F1 side of things, when I went you could go early in the day and queue up to get 'VIP' bands for the music concerts on the main stage. This meant you save queuing later and can rock up to the reserved area right in front of the main stage at any time, well worth it for the atmosphere even if you're not particularly a fan of the acts.

Forget cabs, huge queues and dubious fares, metro all the way

Enjoy, I'm envious... has to be up there with one of the best GPs I've been to for all round experience. biggrin

Hi guys,

I'm heading to Singapore F1 this year, can't wait - counting down the days!

I bought the 3 day package, Qualifying is Turn 1 Grandstand and the Race is at the end of the Padang straight so hopefully get to see some high speed/hard braking action.

I went in 2009, sat at the T1 grandstand.

Went for walkies and found a great standing spot at the last corner. You can get right up to the barrier and see the across the pit exit and around the final corner and penultimate straight. It was dead, no one else there. It's up a slight bank next to the start of the start/finish grandstands.

I thought the GP was brilliant. As usual they have the big screens around to see all the action, and there's enough decent support races. Food was really good (compared to Silverstone it was amazing) and reasonable too. This was back in 2009 though.

I'm on for this too, and after getting advice from non-PHers booked the Padang Grandstand for practice, the Bay Grandstand for qualifying and the Turn 1 Grandstand for the race. Not cheap, but when you consider flying out there in the first place and staying for the weekend it's worth putting some investment into the main event.

First F1 GP outside of Silverstone... can't wait!
