Looking to take wife and son(6) to a F1 race in Europe, but not Hungary or Silverstone next year.

Spain is top of the wish list because its in May.
need a hotel (4 star min) close to the circuit
as would like to get a taxi to the track, and not to far from the airport.

It's a shame Valencia is not on the calender as that was pretty much a package 'couples' F1 weekend. 4 & 5 star hotels within walking distance of the track, beach and nightlife and an airport not too far away.

Last time I checked Monza is reasonable too.
Thats about what iam looking for frown

Hungary I'd have thought. Stay in Budapest and travel to the circuit. Good transport links iirc.

Did that one last year wink was good, traveling by train was long and a very long walk at the other end,
so ended up getting taxi each day.
Going to Silverstone for 5 days this year smile

I would doubt if you would find a 4* hotel close to the circuit , as it is in the middle of an industrial estate, Ibis Budget if you are lucky.

If you don't rush to get out after the race the train is fairly painless, but you do have a 25min walk (or more depending where you watch from ) to the station.

Taxi will be expensive & God knows how you would find him (& him you ) in the chaos after the race. Leaving by car after the race you will be stuck in a jam ( & paying for it) so wouldn't have thought Barcelona ticks too many of the boxes you have identified.

Not been but planning too, surely Barcelona seems a good one for next year. Lovely city cheap flights and seems to be good quick public transport from Barcelona to the circuit.

Exactly this. Went this year, the buses were uber efficient, Barcelona is awesome, what's not to like?

Another vote for Barcelona.

Plenty of accommodation available in the city, then just jump on the train to Montmelo station from Barcelona (if you get one of the Bonotren tickets, which enable you 10 journeys on the one ticket, it works out cheaper and a heck of a lot more convenient).

The trains back from the circuit can be busy, however - but the ride is only 20 mins and they put on extra services on the Sunday to cope.

I did it last year when I was studying in Spain - three day ticket to the free-standing areas for 99 euros, not much more than a weekend at the BTCC...

Another vote for Barcelona. I went last year and loved it.

Cheap flights to stay the whole weekend, cheap and regular trains from the city to the track. You can walk from the station to the circuit and it's worth doing to soak up the atmosphere.

I walked round the whole circuit and there didn't seem a bad view from anywhere.

I must go back next year.

Ironically Monaco used to be the cheapest to do, and might still be! However you do had to slum it a bit, and get a cheap ticket on the hillside under the palace, get there early to bag your spot and you could seem them round the harbour and down the start of the main straight. In fact you'd see a lot more of the track than from any grandstand.

The train station is of course right by the circuit, so we'd camp down at Nice or Cannes, train to Monaco and back on race day. Fantasically cheap and excelelnt value for money, far better than any race we went to anywhere else!

Well until we bought Grand bieres at the station bar on the way home!

I did the Catalan MotoGP a couple of years ago.

If transport is an issue, I suggest getting a package deal with a coach. I ended up renting an apartment with Mrs Chev in the Gracia area. We booked tickets and transfers through an agent I use regularly. Dead easy. The circuit is a lovely place to spend time as well - really pleasant with good facilities.

You could also do something similar for Monza. I stayed in Milan and did train one day and bus the other two. Train is a bit more 'real'. On the bus you can have a nice read for an hour.

Massive curve ball...Montreal. Mrs Chev and I stayed in a hostel two mins walk from a metro station for £25/person/night. Private room, private bathroom and it was pennies on the metro into the circuit. The whole city is totally alive for the weekend and there are infinite cool places to eat and drink. Plus, you rarely see a boring Canadian GP. We were there in 2011 and in spite of slight rain, had an absolute ball!

I've done both Monza and Barcelona, both very reasonable requires a little train travel but relatively cheap and well organised! Depends which city you'd rather see more of I guess!?

Enjoy!!

Monza is a doddle, except for getting back to Monza station on Saturday afternoon. The buses are a bit rammed!

Race day the train runs to by the Lesmo corners, so that was dead simple.

Milan is a bit of a dull city though. We went to Bologna after the race weekend, which is beautiful!
