How many years will they spend assuring us they'll turn up "next race" as the cars are "being shipped"?

I was supping a Pimm's in the Fulham Tup the other day when I overheard some bloke talking about the collateral damage of a small team or two going to the wall as being a small price to pay for strengthening the case for a move to customer cars in 2015.

I guess he could've been talking about the turf wars in the minicab world in Chelsea though?

I was surprised by what Horner said on TV recently. He made a case for supplying tubs to other teams. It's a bit archaic to call them chassis.

They could come up with a system a bit like the DVLA and their Q plate points. At the moment teams buy engines, gearboxes, and many other smaller parts. Could people cleverer than me ascribe so many different points for engine, gearbox, suspension, tub, wings, bodywork, electronics. Teams would have to make a certain number of points (a percentage of the parts) of the car themselves. The chassis specs are so tight now that I guess they're largely similar. This could leave the smaller teams able to spend and invest in the most competitive areas.

Just an idea.

It might serve Honda quite well to run a second team with McLaren. Mugen, perhaps?

Will Buxton tweeted that there are lots of rumours but "a usually impeccable source reckons its about to be bought by a very familiar source" and then followed up with "if true I don't imagine they'll be getting their hands on Mercedes engines any time soon"

So, familiar name, possibly at odds with Merc..

BMW then ? Want a slice of the action and to fight arch rival Mercedes ?

Some are saying Brawn but I don't think there are is necessarily any animosity there, plus he gave up BrawnGP because he didn't want to run a team, I don't see him returning to do that.

Any other names we can think of ? Maybe Toyota coming back to rival Honda ?

Neither BMW or toymota would want a merc lump though would they. It'd defeat the point as a manufacturer entrant.

RBR3?

Maybe it's not a car manufacturer? It might be a rival drinks manufacturer.

Talking of rival drinks manufacturers, it would make sense for Monster to have an F1 team. They already sponsor Merc and I bet they would have a livery that stands out. It would make sense for it to be the 2nd Merc team too.

Rallycross, Gymkhana stuff and competing in the American rally championship again. Plus his usual business interests.

Living the dream really.

Err chaps, didn't they say they'll NOT be getting Mercedes engines? So, a manufacturer could be an option, or someone tied to Renault or Ferrari somehow...

yes So whilst that could mean any car manufacturer, it probably rules out Prodrive, as they have strong links to Aston Martin, who are now going to be using AMG engines in their road cars, so probably would use an Merc engine.

So BMW, possibly, one of the VAG group maybe. Could it be Renault themselves, Redbull are posturing about doing their own engine & Lotus are hoping to get a merc engine, so if Renault want to stay in F1 they might need their own team again, they also have ties to Caterham with the Alpine thing they were doing together, so could we see an Alpine branded team?

Who else? Leftfield choice, maybe Kia, I'm sure I read somewhere that were trying to enter the luxury end of the market and take on Merc/BMW/Audi, they're also on record as saying that they've at least looked at F1, so maybe they see buying Caterham as their best way in, with 2 teams just been given a license, I doubt there will be anymore to hand out for a while.

So, who else?

Didn't Flavio Briatore own QPR with Tony Fernandez at one point? Didn't he also have some connection with an engine supplier? What happened with his ban at the end?

IIRC Flav part owned it with Bernie, they both sold to Fernandes.

The more I think about it the more I reckon its going to be a McLaren B team.

Do any of those manufacturers mentioned have an engine ready to race next season? I can't see them getting a customer engine from one of the current players. That would suggest to me that it's either a privateer buyer or one of the existing players taking it on as a B-team.
