Susie Wolff (wife of Toto Wolff, boss of Merc F1 and Williams F1 shareholder) should be able to get a seat with those connections. However, the ultimate issue for female drivers--which hits them right from karting--is sponsorship. Brands that sponsor F1 most likely manufacturer products that either appeal to men or are aimed at male-dominated industry, so they aren't interested in sponsoring a woman. Companies that manufacture products for women aren't interested in sponsoring F1, so by extension are not interested in sponsoring a woman either.

You should read up on what Michelle mouton has to say on the subject now (in her FIA role)
"for many years people have asked me why there have been no women following in my footsteps. I really hope the Commission can help answer that question and that we can attract and support women in all areas of our sport." For example?

But why should what she says matter? The argument is from what she did.........

There have been female fighter pilots, but the world is hardly flush with them and if what I've read on the internets is true the higher G forces would seem to favour them more than those of an F1 car.
The world isn't exactly flush with fighter pilots (or F1 pilots) of either sex. Tell me more on why the higher Gs of a fighter would favour women more than those of a F1 car.

I don't think the stereotypical woman's role in F1 is that of grid girl etc. Claire Williams, Monisha Kaltenborn at Sauber, quite a few teams have female mechanics seen in the background on TV.. Maybe young girls (on the whole) just have little interest in driving ?

Bernie wasn't young im the 70s, he's been old forever hehe

Patrick didn't win the Formula Ford festival, she came second in 2000. That year she competed in 14 races in the series, winning 3 points. 2001 she scored 10 points. 3 years in NASCAR Sprint cup she has 2 top 10 finishes from 63 starts and 13 laps led from 179,954 driven.
TL;DR she wasn't and isn't good enough for F1. NASCAR is a hugely sponsor driven sport, as I said earlier she generates money, not race wins.
She's known as Panica in the US...

As far as I am aware, the shorter a person is, the easier they can deal with high G-forces due to the distance their extremities are from their heart and women tend to be shorter.... I don't think there are any other serious physiological (or mental) reasons why a women would be better at coping with G-forces than a man.

I grew up on various RAF and other bases so my perspective on the number of fighter pilots in the world is probably a little skewed. I've never met a female one though.

As for G forces, presumably the shorter distance on average between heart and brain, I've not heard any rationale that's truly gender specific, like I say I've only read it on the internet so it tends to be devoid of referenced papers.

that's only relevant in a plane though, cars do not really do vertical G per say and planes don't really do lateral G

Apropos the G, F1 drivers today tend to be pretty short, but there doesn't seem to be any G related disadvantage for the taller ones (although there are weight and packaging issues for taller drivers).

First British (combat) fighter pilot (of course, many female ferry pilots few Spits, Hurricanes, etc. during WW2) was Jo Salter of 617 Squadron (Tornado) it seems.

Ladies can deal with Gs ok. Switches and gauges are not a problem. It is just numbers, if enough ladies want to race then there will be successful ladies in F1

Am I the only one who thinks Susie Wolff shouldn't be let near an F1 car?

A quick look at her career, she's fking hopeless. Yes, she's better than me behind a wheel but I was brought up in a council flat not a race track.

why would you put someone like that forward when there is so much better talent waiting. Its sexist

She is married to Toto Wolf and she could probably bring in some serious sponsors

I would have thought If Susie Wolff was good enough she would be in a Merc. I have no doubt we will eventually see a woman competing in F1, I just don’t think it will be Susie Wolff.

They're both mediocre drivers who haven't got into the sport based on ability, purely based on money and who they know. Sadly this is the way of sport these days.
