His brakes failed.

Im not a conspiracy hack, but it is starting to get a bit convinient that lewis's car is having the majority of the issues. And all good for a german driver, in a german team, at a german circuit?

Looked quite a fast/big impact. Hope Lewis is okay.

Well it's possible to get a good result on race day starting near the back, just look at Botas at Silverstone.

Anybody else notice the lack of crowd for Qualifying?! Perhaps it will get better for the race but I thought with a German driver and team leading the Championship they would have had a better turnout!

Problem is that Nico will win the race now, except for any other car failures.

You think it's even vaguely possible the team are going to risk seriously injuring their driver just for the sake of pleasing German masses/corporates?

You mean the son on the famous Finnish World Champion who has lived in almost all his life in Monaco?

He'll only be considered fully German if he wins the title. smile

Wolff mentioned something about the small attendance, referencing Austria and Silverstone having much bigger crowds. Maybe the circuit are taking the mickey with ticket prices ?

Awww feck. Hopefully he's ok.

On the plus side it does mean we get to see Lewis slice his way through the field tomorrow.

If it was even vaguely possible that Merc would ever do such a thing, I don't think brakes would be first on their list given the safety implications.

Regardless, Lewis is a massive commercial draw from the team, there is no way it would be in their interests to sabotage him.

Are they deleting times if you go off track like Nico just did?

Bit disappointed with BBC ... again. Correction. BIG disappointment.

Radio5Live should at least be sticking to planned broadcasting programme and doing some R5L verbals on Q1-2-3 instead of regurgitating some Golf stuff. I enjoy the Open but .... why change or stray from published broadcasting times and plans? Unable to listen to Q1-2-3 in the car. Please stick to original plans.

More ammunition for Pie in the SKY ... frown

I've half a mind to take out a TV Tax and cancel it toot sweet in disgust. If I had half a mind!

Grrrrrh!

It appears not. More great consistency from the FIA rolleyes

They mention in the pre-race show that they could leave the track without penalty in a couple of places, as it wouldn't gain them any time.

I don't.

Although, having said that, Renault didn't seem to mind risking Nelson Piquet, Jr. in 2008.

For the avoidance of doubt, I'm not for one second suggesting anything of Mercedes. Just saying that drivers' safety is not always paramount to a team.

Sarah Holt (BBC) just retweeted a tweet that said they spotted LH's front right brake disc go bang.

It certainly looked like his right front brake disc let go.

That makes sense as the left locked up but the right appeared to freewheel during the spin.

They've judged that there is no advantage to running wide and so aren't penalising it as the act of doing it is penalty in itself. They only enforce where it gains an advantage.

On the upside, Lewis will have free choice of tyres at start and two brand new sets of tyres more than anyone else....

yes
Merc would happily take the enormous PR damage that injuring one of their drivers due to faulty brakes would bring while racing in their home market.

All to promote the interests of a Monégasque who is only slightly more german than the Queen.

Plausible.
