Man bemoans modern F1 despite not having watched for years rolleyes and in doing so brings out the rose tinted spectacle brigade.

It's progress, people. The cars have never been safer and they are pretty much just as fast as they have been at any time in the past 10+ years even with the rulemakers clipping their wings every year to try to slow them down.

If anybody watched yesterday's race and didn't enjoy it then I'm sorry, there's no helping you. If you think less of the drivers just because they are thankfully unlikely to get killed these days, you need to take a long hard look at yourself.

^^^ so true.

Also the rose-tinted specs thing going on is amazing. The 80's turbo era so fapped over these days produced some really tedious racing - about five laps in you'd get the dreaded phrase "and now we're entering the fuel saving phase" and it would frequently be completely processional until they turned the boost back up again for laps just before and after the pit stops.

The safety improvements are a good thing, however the rest of the changes have been on the most part terrible and for appalling reasons that have little to do with racing.

The massive nanny state PC book of rules where they micro manage every little action the drivers take

The ridiculous artificial measures they take to allow overtaking to try to compensate for the stupid aero rules they have enforced on the teams, other formulas do not have issues running close to each other, but they allow ground effect ... just watch indycars

the totally pointless hybrid nonsense they introduced that not only has near bankrupted some of the teams and turned the drivers into on the fly coders it has committed the heinous crime of making the cars sound utterly crap, and for what the pretense of making F1 Green? flying one team and all their gear to a race produces more CO2 than all the cars do all year... It has nothing to do with racing and everything to do with marketing, primarily of one particular German car company.

Bernie loosing the plot, the threat of gold medals? double points for the last race??? and this week the most patronising thing ever, great big signs that say "Bernie says think before you drive!" I do think thanks, I think Bernie is going senile. Why not start reversing the grid or even more laughable determining grid position by randomly drawing a name out of a hat .....

The people running F1 are now so far removed from reality its beyond a joke, the decisions they are making are farcical, they need to remember F1 should be about one thing, drivers racing each other flat out for the whole race in cars that look and sound awesome.

Really? I thought F1 is about pushing the boundaries of engineering, and developing and running new technology that might one day filter down to our road cars.

Carbon Fibre, Gearbox Technologies, Tyre tech, stability and traction systems, brake technology, KERS systems, and steering wheel mounted controls, to name but a few.

+1 and I've been watching F1 for 20+ years too.

Yesterdays race was epic, and some of the recent Vettel / Alonso battles have been some of the best ever in F1.

I'm struggling to think of a better era for F1 than the current one and I've been watching it for 30 years or more. Yes DRS is a bit artificial but it works. Almost every race this year has been epic. I even like the sound.

As previously said, it wouldn't matter if they changed the rules again. People would still moan.

Another vote for this season being excellent. Sure I miss the V10 bellow and the V8 howl but I still like the sound. Besides, although I wasnt around in that era I'm sure the 4 cylinder turbo cars couldn't have sounded any better than the current ones.

The racing has been spot on, Hamilton abd Rosberg having fantastic battles and all the usual suspects competing well for the next 3 places. Good to see strong competition and involvement from pretty much all of the teams and their drivers.

Really enjoying it so far!

The best bit for me is seeing a Williams back in contention... even if at present they are merely the faster of the 'also rans' behind the Mercs.

No, the advanced engineering / material use was a result of trying to go faster (or safer and faster) under the prescribed rules, the cars did not exist to promote advanced technology it was a bi-product of trying to win

Now they are spouting "pushing the boundaries of technology" dogma to try and justify all the eco nonsense the committees have enforced onto them for some half baked and pointless environmental ideology

I never really understand this argument. Do you want F1 drivers to start dying again for your amusement?

Ricciardo was a joy to watch yesterday. Add in Bottas, sublime work from Hamilton and it was a cracking watch. Enjoyed every minute.

a very daft thing to say? very daft indeed

why would an F1 car become less safe because it had a NA engine and no hybrid crap on it?

and if safety is your primary concern why not enforce ABS, ESP and collision avoidance braking?

For me I would like to see it be more about the drivers rather than the cars and how good they are. It will not happen with all the money involved in sponsorship etc.

on some parts they do of course

but nobody said lets put all this new crud on the cars because it will go faster, some bureaucratic committee declared from 2014 you must have it, even the original Kers was only used because the rules where changed to allow it and not having it gave you a disadvantage. if the rules had never been changed it would never have come into the formula

its the same for audi oil burners at lemans, they would never have happened if the rules had not been rigged to give them an advantage

Lost on the moaners however, largely because they're not even watching it!

I forgot to mention how much pleasure I get from the modern camera work and technology. Me and my old man used to watch together when he was still around and I know he would marvel at the overhead pit views, sweeping corner shots, on screen telemetry, driver radio, epic HD detail, slow mo etc etc

All of which either didn't exist or were pitifully naive in their application in times gone by.

Grand Prix (the film) is on BBC2 now, watching Spa from the sixties is an eye opener, no armco, racing between houses.
Watching the footage of Spa and Brands was quite a yikes moment , not much in the way of crowd control was there hehe
