I don't think anyone would disagree with the quotes from Bernie, but I wonder if he'll get his way.

"I want a world championship of drivers, not engineers."

Oh? Well why is there a constructors championship then? F1 has always been a contest between engineers as much as it has between drivers.

The four he's picked for the committee:

Christian Horner, Toto Wolff, Luca di Montezemolo and Vijay Mallya. The new 'in-crowd'?

Shirley the real question is just why Bernie keeps slagging the sport off this year? Where's the gain for him?

To devalue the brand so he can buy it back again for less money.

It's always about money with Bernie. Everything he says and does is politically motivated and ultimately to benefit him financially.

I don't think he's slagging it of, certainly no more than fans have (and a lot less than others who claim to be fans).
All he is saying is we don't need tacky gimmicks to spice things up (or at least no tacky gimmicks that he didn't think of...)

What's a standing restart?
Is it a standing start after safety car or something?

Yes.

So currently, safety car runs around the track, on its final lap it turns the lights on the roof off, this is a signal that means it will enter the pit lane at the next opportunity, the race will then restart when the lead car passes the restart line (which can be the start/finish line, but not always).

Under the new proposed rule when the safety car pulls in to the pits the race cars will line up on the grid in their current positions and wait for the lights to go out, at which point the race has restarted. Remember at this point any lapped cars will have unlapped themselves so all cars are in position order.

The FIA decided to do this to spice up the racing, it is unpopular with the fans (to put it mildly).

That data is getting on for 5 months old, lots of water under the bridge since then.

Plus its from GMM, who to be honest aren't exactly very well respected.

Not saying there weren't drops in figures at the start of the season, just that it could well have changed since then.

You may be right but it wasn't that busy in Hungary last weekend. Lots of space in tHe grandstands, on the banks and we cleared the car park in half an hour from leaving our seats. There is definitely still a concern about falling audience numbers but I doubt Mercedes have had as much effect as all the other meddling.

It has to be a worry for Ecclestone, as much as he tries to say the figures don't matter.

CVC are trying to sell the rights with a declining market. The peak of half a billion viewers has long gone and, despite some cracking racing this season, the best for some time, viewers are still switching off. Sky is a major cause in this country, Alonso and Ferrari in Spain and Italy.

There are all sorts of different pressures nowadays and F1 was never at the top as of right. It had to earn its position. I watch more rugby than motor racing. A few years ago I could not.

Like a number of commentators on here, I feel the sport has been mismanaged for years and it is beginning to pay the price. Once F1 stops being a must see for so many, it will plummet quite quickly, that's the way of the market. The only ones left will be the fans.

What needs to happen is for CVC to either get a grip or get selling. It is a risk of course, but less so than keeping with the status quo.

All we can do now is enjoy what is turning into a classic season, with some tremendously exciting racing.
