Erm, just checking if your up in caught for bribery how is it okay to offer money to have the charges dropped?

Surely if legal to bribe, sorry pay, your way out of court you shouldn't be there at all!!!

Well spotted, I hadn't noticed!

So $1M dollars goes to a children's hospital. That's good.

$99M goes to the 'Bavarian State coffers'. That stinks.

"Former Justice Minister Sabine Leutheusser-Schnarrenberger, of the Liberal FDP party, criticised use of the loophole in the Ecclestone case, saying it was "not just bad taste - it's really insolent".

She said it allowed rich people to go free, whereas the less well-heeled could face prison.

No st Sherlock? And there was me thinking that German politicians weren't as dumb as ours.

This has been a massive fail for Ecclestone though. There were reports that he offered $20m to the state before the trial, and that if it went ahead at the end of the prosecution case his offer would be considerably less. Or rather five times more.

He's had two legal trials now and in one he came out the winner despite being heavily criticised by the judge for apparent lack of honesty, and this time he's had to pay $100m to make his escape.

I remember reading that even if found guilty he'd not go to prison and the fine would have been around the $20m.

Mind you, we await Chris Sylt's justification for his suggestion that this was a total victory for the now $100m poorer Ecclestone and the richer by $100m state came out of it the loser. Can't wait.

The only question is how this will affect the sport.

From what I saw of him on TV, he's feeling the pressure. Recent interviews suggest the same. I get the impression he's losing it. The sport is just waiting for him to go.

From what I heard today, the prosecution felt that the case wouldn't go their way hence why this offer came about.

Where and from whom did you hear what ?? are you on the Ecclestone payrol as well ??

If so, would canny old Ecclestone be paying 100 million $ if he knew he's innocent ?? or if he knew that there wouldn't be any evidence against him and would walk away anyway ?? Do you think his lawyers would advise him to pay anyway ??

According to the BBC, Bernie now has buyer's remorse.

Luckily its means tested, so we can offer, say £3.99 and some smarties...

Also, the same as the amount Mclaren were fined by the FIA. Wonder if there is any link to the money?

If I was on his pay roll, would I be posting on this forum?

I heard it on TalkSport from one of the non TalkSport journo's. Also;

From some BBC news article said:
His offer was accepted by German prosecutors, with the judge saying the charges "could not be substantiated".
And of course they would suggest he paid, like I am sure yours would if you were ever to be in the same situation, because time is money, and time spent in court when he could be doing something else is easily worth what he paid.

Does it make it right that potentially someone can "buy" innocence - of course not. But it happens and will continue to happen.

I wonder if he'll claim it back as a tax-deductable expense in the same way McLaren did?

His not altogether tongue-in-cheek suggestion that Bavaria should use the money to build a GP track suggests to me that Bernie is far from demented.

It absolutely stinks, German justice is an oxy-moron.

We're stuck with that conniving little scensoredt for a while longer, worse luck.
