Marussia have invented some magic engine paint that is expected give a 20HP improvement to the Ferrari engines.

No they haven't-

Ferrari engineers first wanted the innovation to be tested on the ‘power units’ run by its F1 customer, the backmarker team Marussia.

'more heat to the turbine'- I thought you'd want to keep heat away from the turbine? unless it has something to do with MGU-H?

Ferrari magic paint?
Wasn’t there a rumour during the early part of this century that Ferrari experimented with nano-technology in paint? The idea being that it would ‘change shape’ to (illegally) aid aerodynamics? Apparently it was abandoned because of cost.
I read it somewhere, or possibly dreamt it.

No you didn't, Nigel Roebuck wrote one of his columns in Autosport about it (when he wasn't banging on about Tony Blair!)

No, the more heat in the air, the more energy is in it, and there will be a larger differential of pressure between the two sides of the turbine.

Turbines are driven by heat, not by the exhaust gasses 'blowing' them round. So you want as much heat in to the turbine as you can get away with.

That's interesting, I never thought of that- but it makes sense if you turn the theory on it's head and think of it as a jet engine.

It's all about exhaust enthalpy.

Que?

Turbines are driven by the movement of exhaust gas pushing the turbine wheel around. If you have a larger differential of pressure on the manifold side to the exhaust side, the air will move faster, it'll try to get to the low pressure side

More heat means more pressure pre turbine, which means a larger pressure differential.

So that would be the zircotech and some heat wrap that you can buy off the shelf then?

I had heard the rumours that Paul Daniels was on contract to Ferrari, but never thought it would come to anything.

"Now that's magic!"
