Why open topics that are superfluous?

I didn't come here to read the content. I came here to point out that the thread is unnecessary due to the fact that the debate has been well and truly discussed (to death, actually) in a number of other threads.

If you need assistance to find the other threads, here are some handy links -

Because I don't spend my life on Pistonheads and I didn't see any of those topics, nor could I find any looking through many pages in the F1 Forum.

I also filmed this clip recently which compares F1 cars of different eras at the same place, on the same day, through the same microphone. I haven't yet seen another direct comparison on film. I'm sure you have loads of clips you can offer links to.

If there's somewhere else you'd rather be I suggest you (along with anyone else who objects to topics being discussed again) go there. It really is that simple surely?

I spent 4 days at Silverstone this year at every single session the new cars ran on the track. And sadly they sound, to quote Vettel 'st'. The other 999 of my colleagues there no doubt agree...not of course that I canvassed all of them...but those I did speak to were not impressed...

Unlike the GP2 cars which make a sound that only an expensive racing engine could make.

I am not sure that there's much that can be done to improve their drone, do I guess we are stuck with them.

I was shocked by how crap they sounded when we went to silverstone was a real let down. The actual racing and experience was good but they just sounded crap in my opinion.

Can I start another thread on the same thing as hundreds previously?
Those that moan that they're not interested in the topic of a thread should not bother posting in them.

I am interested in the sound of F1 cars and am not bored by 'sound' threads.

I went to Spa with interest this last weekend. Despite being 30, and a fan of F1 since I can remember sitting on my dad's lap aged 5 watching Mansell in a Ferrari, I've never been to a Grand Prix. I have, however, been to the Goodwood FoS on two occasions, and a couple of Silverstone test days, most recently last summer - the last in season V8 test, I think.

I liked the new sound. It was an interesting sound to hear, quite futuristic and aggressive. The volume was fine - not as loud as the gp2 cars, but they still sounded like racing cars. Far louder than the Porsches and certainly not quieter than the TV helicopter as some have mentioned.

In addition, they were not tiring to listen to. After 30 mins of a relatively crowded test session last summer (only 1 car per team, remember) I had to retreat from the track to let my aching ears recover, such was the volume level. At Spa, you could hear the crowd cheer at the overtaking moves, the atmosphere on the bank up the Kemmel straight was fantastic. And with no earplugs, the whole race wasn't a problem.

Gareth Jones On Speed episode 228 has some good quality stereo recordings of the sound of the 2014 British Grand Prix. Worth a listen on decent headphones to get an idea of the character of the new sounds (if not the volume).....

Some valid points timblob from a live spectator point of view. I can remember when F1 first went Turbo in the late 70's, early 80's and how much quieter they were and that you didn't need earphones any more. As a kid at the time I definitely preferred it, plus Turbos were sci-fi technology back then. I suppose it's quite likely that 10 year olds feel the same now about the new cars.

However, hearing the old cars was a reminder of how much the sound added to the whole experience of seeing an F1 car scream past for the first time. It was also great that there used to be a variety of sounds. In the early 90's we had V10 Renaults, V12 Ferraris and V8 Fords. I'd love to see the rules allow for more variation but I'm certain that the need to keep a lid on costs will prevent that. I'm all for innovation in F1, I think the regulations should do more to encourage it. I also accept the reality of manufacturers wanting to use F1 to showcase new, more relevant road car tech. Take that away and you lose Mercedes, Renault and Honda would ditch the comeback plans. But I'm still not comfortable that GP2 cars sound better. Maybe that was also the case when F1 went Turbo in the 80s?

No it wasn't - we liked the speed and the change from years and bloody years of DFVs.Some of the 80s turbos were very very loud indeed , others just whistled and popped a bit. The various 12s in the 70s and early 90s sounded magnificent, as did many of the V10s(especially the Toyota which in the flesh made an amazingly complex howl ). The little 2.4 V8s were loud but were not a pleasant noise at all- the first generation of F1 engine where I couldn't tell one engine from another . No torque either- the current turbo V6s are so much better at stretching the driver in putting the power down. 95% or more of the wittering is , I suspect , from people who have seen either very few or no Grands Prix at all from the trackside . As said , it's about the racing and if you're that bothered about being deafened go to Silverstone Classic and Santa Pod as well like I do .

these are real racing cars and the variety is great.... and I am even liking the diesels and the downshifts of the Ferrari Italia at 0:42.. and a couple of decent V8's

We sportscar fans complain about a couple of diesels when we have got something like this
