Red Bull got to be a world brand through marketing genius.

Is this any more than a PR exercise? Look at the media attention it has created... If the lad fails, they've got plenty more in the pipeline; in the meantime, they get the headlines.

F1 is just becoming so watered down and rediculous it's almost too much to bear.

Not only do we have joke dildo cars, with silent wheezy engines. We now have spoilt brats who have won litlle more than a few kart races. Daddy obviously invested his money wisely over the years. Can you imagine a 16yo stepping straight into Sennas Mclaren Honda!?

There was an article recently about current F1 drivers being robots and whinging like pathetic little babies over the radio 'mummy he won't let me past' 'his wheel went 1cm over the white line'. I preffered it when F1 drivers were grown men and not in nappies. No wonder viewing and attendance figures are falling off a cliff! Stupid decision to sack JEV!

Has he got his road car licence yet. I know that there are exemptions for under 17's to race in the junior ranks but it would be a bit embarrassing for F1 if he still has not.

I don't think Button had his road licence when williams signed him up. It'll all be taken care of before the start of next season.

In fairness, Chris Amon, Mike Thackwell and Ricardo Rodriguez were F1 teenagers in a much more dangerous era.

I don't care about the age. If he's good, like Kyvat or Vettel were as teenagers he deserves it. Remember it's only a couple of years since we had a 43 year old set fastest time at Monaco.

Reading the Daily Mail much?

Yes, he's pretty young, but really.....dildo cars? Silent wheezy engines (which are actually considerably more powerful than the V8s). Please.

One view - he's much too young, can't possibly be ready, etc

Another view - highly experienced people with access to a lot of data have taken brave but calculated risk on a very young driver.
This is pretty much what I was trying to express, but you did it much better.

FYI I think the dildos will be gone next year.
Granted I don't disagree F1 is in a bit of a state but young and inexperienced F1 drivers have been coming in for ages. Kimi Raikkonen barely scratched the lower formulae for a start, and let's not forget any old wag could wander into a racing car ~50/60 years ago. There's always going to be talent and there's always going to be trash, no matter how they end up in F1.
I actually think the current crop is fairly decent compared to, say, the last time Jos the Boss raced. Have a look at the names in 2003, what a bunch of no-hopers. Or even back in Senna's heyday, there were so many forgettable drivers back then. I don't care if they're robots if they race well.

That's correct, but hardly relevant. Driving a Kia Rio through villages is barely related to racing an F1 car on a GP circuit.

Even Jorge Lorenzo didn't get his motorcycle license years after he won his first MotoGP championship.

I really wonder what the reactions would be if the kid was British. wink

For info : in the Netherlands everyone ecstatic is of course (as great drivers are rather rare), and this doesn't come as such as surprise as his progress has been more monitored. The overall opinion is : He really is *that* good.

People who know him have stated that he's at 16 already a lot more mature than his dad was at 22 when he started in F1 (and probably ever will be). One only needs to look at MotoGP how mature a young racer can be.

What happens if he gets on the podium? Does he get given a bottle of Perrier to throw around?

Come to think of it, what happens if Kvyat score a podium this year in Austin?

It is! You're allowed to start taking lessons when you're 16.5 years old and pass your exam at 17. However, whenever you're behind the wheel you must have a supervisor that you've submitted (and has been checked by the government) in the car with you. So Jos will be chauffering Max around for a while still.

On that basis they should have signed up George Michael.

How does this even matter? He's clearly a better (race) driver than >99% of the population, so how would it matter whether he had a road car license or not? Although of course, when asked that 99% I'm sure are at least as good as he is.....

He might have a problem at Singapore. He'll have to ask his mum if he can stay up late.

Agreed.

To be fair though, if you put an immature young idiot on a 1400bhp/tonne, 215mph bike he'd probably only make into the global press once.

he was the world kart champion, the european champion before that. He has won 8 races in his debut F3 season from the often difficult transition from karts to cars. There are many many others out there with lots of money behind them - the kid is very obviously to anybody who knows anything at all about motorsport a bit special.

Today's cars are massively complex to drive - and they are a lot more lively this year than in many years before.

your post is poorly informed - but obviously if people can't see (hear!) past the noise and ignore the fact a great season of racing in F1 is unfolding, then maybe we need to make them loud again and have everyone content with sponsors and manufactures moving away - at least the audience figures would improve for a year or two eh!

On Max - great talent, but a huge risk that somebody that young can handle the pressure outside the car. He'll be fine on Friday > Sunday, inbetween that he'll need a lot of protecting a lot of focus and maturity he can't possible have developed yet at that age in order to make it.
