Don't think so.

He has plenty of single seater experience racing in Japan including a couple of poles and a win in four races this year ...

There's a nice piece by Joe Saward about why he got the drive.

As to everyone who asks why he wants to just jog around the back - imagine if over the next couple of races he manages to do something with it, drag a notable performance out of it, put it in Q2, drive it beyond the car's limits. Maybe even score a point. Why then he'd be the new Alonso.

Having said that it seems unlikely, even for a three times LeMans winner.
I personally don't buy that explanation at all. I generally think that Joe is more or less on the money but in this case he may simply be toeing the party line.

If anyone was going to drag a notable performance out of the car, it would've been (and in some case was) Kobyashi.

maybe its a Caterham development role. Lotterer has driven more miles than most in the most advanced hybrid race car in the world, maybe Caterham want him to develope their car. with no in season testing, using a race weekend he can rack up quite a few miles.

This season has a hell of a lot more chassis electrics, powertrain modes and differnt driving techniques to any preious year.
This makes the most sense to me...

Would have thought the reason why Caterham would want him might be linked to his experience of Spa. He's well used to the circuit and in WEC drives the 6hrs of Spa so would have far more mileage at Spa under his belt than most. Certainly more than the current Caterham drivers.

Caterham have 0 points and a single point will make a huge difference financially for 2015. Maybe that's the reason? A dice roll for 2015?

Although he'll have his work cut out. He's taller and almost 20kgs heavier than Kobayashi and if each 10kgs costs you 3/10ths a lap he's going to have to be pretty special to get more out of the car than Kamui.

Well he's beaten M. Ericsson in FP1 over the same number of laps. Not a bad effort at all considering he's not been in an F1 car for over a decade. I hope he does well this weekend.
