Marussia's website seem to be down at the moment, but according to the twitters, Rossi is driving this weekend instead of Chilton.

Update: Story on James Allen's blog http://www.jamesallenonf1.com/2014/08/alexander-ro...
Mentions contractual problems and that Chilton will be back.

Just read this on Autosport. Apparently it is due to "contractual issues" with Max Chilton.

So "contractual issues" is team speak for "money issues" then...

Interesting...

Clearly it was very last minute indeed!

Sounds like Max's millions are running out and they need more to keep going.

Nah He's all paid up - but sounds like the team is going broke so rather than giving them more money he's loaned out his car for a race so they can sell someone the oppertunity for a big bag of cash.

All amounts to the same thing. If they're that desperate for cash now, they will be at the next race, and the next. Who'll be in the seat then? And maybe more importantly, next year?

Is it performance related, and that's being used as an excuse to boost the coffers? Most contracts have a performance clause and as his teammate has 2 points and he has zero he'll almost certainly be in breach of it.

The statement from Max and the one from the team don't match up, and he was already at the track when the announcement was made so something smells fishy from one side or the other.

So man who pays for drive is ousted to be replaced by someone else to pay to drive...Max can't be over the moon about that!

Can't imagine what sort of performance clause Max could have agreed to!

If you aren't in front of Bianchi, by some measure or other, by August we can replace you? That was never going to happen.

If you haven't scored points etc? Neither was that without a massive stroke of luck.

Love to know how that could work! wink

It seems, as said, that the need for team funding is driving this, but slightly surprised that Graham Chilton hasn't just coughed up. Perhaps he's seeing the light.

It's down to money and next year I would assume
"The British team said Rossi, who joined Marussia last month as a reserve driver, would substitute for Chilton "while contractual issues are resolved".

I know Rossi and there was nothing from him in the build up to Spa.

I don't think Rossi had anymore money on the table.
I have an unconfirmed figure that he paid something in the region of $10m for his Caterham GP2 and Caterham F1 reserve seat - but he's always denied he paid any money to me.

I think you need to look at what Daddy chilton has been up to.
A few months back he severed his final ties with Aon and has setup with Aon's main competitor and with rival broker Arthur J. Gallagher & Co.

Now reading between the lines Aon have pulled the plug on young Max's hobby and as reported earlier in the year, Aon are focusing their sponsorship on Manchester United

I doubt you'll see Max back in the car, unless there's legal threats to force Aon to pay up

( just had this unofficially confirmed that Aon have pulled their backing )

Sounds very plausible. You don't reckon Graham would put some of his own, or Gallagher's money in?

Grahame Chilton didn't get rich or that successful by using his own money wink
Perhaps you'll see a deal next year with Gallagher if that's part of GC's contract. Though they'd be better off backing a decent team for $30m a year !

Aon are no longer involved with MUFC. Replaced by Chevroletter who offered far more money.

Which would appear to be the case at Marussia.

Shame for Max though as I thought he did a decent job with a car that probably isn't very good. Hope he gets his seat back however I doubt very much that he will.

You sure? I thought Aon were still sponsoring MU, along with Chevrolet. And the difference is that there doesn't seem to be an alternative for Marussia yet.

The odds are that Max will only get his seat back if he continues to pays for it.

Didn't realise that getting massacred every race by your teammate was doing a good job.

Aon are still sponsoring Man United, but Chevrolet are their new shirt sponsors, from the start of the current season.

It's a shame that Max has lost his seat. He has done a solid job and seems like a nice guy. This is the reality of being a pay driver, unfortunately.
