Is it me or is Ericsson looking properly rubbish? Outqualified last week to the tune of a second by a guy who hasn't been in an F1 car since 2002, then pipped in P1 by a guy who's only just managed to sort a superlicence and is having his first F1 run.

Yep - he's just not up to it.

I don't understand why there's been so much criticism on here of Chilton yet almost nothing said about Ericsson even though he's usually much further off the pace of his teammate.

I guess the assumption may be that Ericsson will simply disappear at the end of the season.

So do you think Kimi will be ordered to give Alonso a tow in qualifying as Ferrari do every year wink

Was just watching FP2 and Hamilton sitting in his chair waiting for his car to work.

Sooner or later Hamilton will be wondering about life without Mercedes. My guess is that if this sort of thing keeps happening it will be sooner.

Have Ferrari, in recent history, ever managed to get that to work?

Amusingly it worked for Massa and not Alonso a few years back as they got the timing wrong on 'nando's turn

Even with all the problems he's going to finish second in the championship, at least, in all probability. That's because of the car, not despite it.

MB are likely to have one of the best, if not the best car next year too. Where's he going to go?

I wonder how its going to pan out this weekend between Lewis and Rosberg. I hope we see some fireworks and Lewis chins him

He seems to be managing to keep calm and I'm sure he'll be pleased with his pace today. IF that's the end of his bad fortune for this weekend he won't be too unhappy come Sunday. I think at last he's learned to take it a race at a time and to keep looking forward (trying not to get hung up on the crap that's happened before - this is at least in part because the car is so fast).... Hope so anyway, want to see a good fight between them this weekend.

Its good to see LH just taking all this in his stride now. He looks like a man who is saying "what will be, will be" to himself. Im sure tomorrow and Sunday will be better days for him.

The thing is, lets say that Rosberg gets his fair dose of reliability issues (as Lewis has had). Everyone will say he lost the WDC because of the car, which isn't necessarily true.

The only thing missing from Lewis's game is a bit of (good) luck.

Who fancies hazarding a guess at the top speed achieved over the course of the weekend?

I found this graph on another forum - nice way of seeing how engine changes on the past have affected top speeds.

My guess is somewhere just short of the V10s, so c365km/h (226mph).

Indeed.

It really is a rock and a hard place. Go to another team who may not give you a car capable of winning the WDC or stick with MB who you know should have a car that can win..

Very interesting! What happened in the late 80s? What that when turbos were banned or something?

I had no idea F1 cars were hitting 370kph!! eek

I know we are set on the current power units.

I do however wonder, what kind of power we would see from this engine formulae:

1 litre
supercharging and turbocharging allowed, no boost limits
20k rpm limit
5 engines for the season
Unlimited fuel for weekend, 200l for race

peaky, undriveable grenades?

Nor me - always thought circa 200 mph was the limit.
