Those F1 driver weights seem comparable with those of pro cyclists. Contador 62kg, Froome 71kg.
MotoGP riders seem a bit lighter but also a bit shorter -
Rossi - 65kg, 1.82m
Marquez - 59kg, 1.68m
Pedrosa - 51kg, 1.60m

I remember reading somewhere that F1 drivers must have a body fat percentage of 10% or lower with the optimum being 7 or 8. That is probably the same as a long distance running athlete.

Yes it's super lean but not unhealthily skinny. That would be 5/6% or less.

The minimum weight should be set at a level at which these guys are not disadvantaged. After all, we want to watch the best drivers in the world in F1, not just ‘the best driver who happens to be under 5’9 and 70kg’
Also, the maximum cost of a F1 drive should be set at $100, after all we want to watch the best drivers in the world in F1, not just "the best driver who happens to be massively wealthy"

Good luck getting through the lower categories without serious backing!

Not sure if you're serious?

Is the weight limit going up next season? Otherwise we going to end up with a track full of jockeys!

I'd be amazed if it didn't, given that the FIA tried to raise it at the start of this season but couldn't get unanimous team support.

I'm pretty sure it is, as I remember Lewis saying he was looking forward to putting back on the 6KG's he dropped for this season.

A few years back I was endurance karting, but also into triathlons. Was always being told I was too thin, but that just came part of the sport.

One weigh in, just before a race, I suddenly thought 'wonder how I compare to the F1 lads?'

Hamilton was 10kg LIGHTER than me...

He must have hollow bones, or something, because was carrying way more muscle than I was.

The simple solution is the car must carry 80kg in the cockpit made up of the drivers weight plus ballast which cannot be placed more than 50cm above, in front of or behind the drivers hips.

This would reduce the advantage of lighter drivers and not disadvantage the heavy drivers.

Is this your first year watching F1 or something? confused

In previous years the minimum weight of car + driver has almost always been easily reached such that with even the heaviest drivers you need to carry a little ballast.

This year the FIA got it wrong because the new power units were heavier than expected.

No, not my first year! rolleyes

Whether the teams can make the minimum weight or not, if they have a lighter driver they stall have an advantage as they can place the ballast where it is most advantageous. This has always been the case and therefore the teams with the lightest driver still have an advantage.

My idea negates any driver weight advantage by having a fixed mass installed in a relatively fixed location within the car.

Ah, right. Apologies - I misread your post in that case.

Damn there's some nice looking ladies asking him to follow them!
I wonder why they're interested in a high-profile, fit, young and daring multimillionaire? scratchchin

65 or 70kg is not scary thin for a man of 5'8" (or 175cm).

The strongest I have ever been in my life was when I trained for a year to get under 64kg, my normal weight is about 67kg. I didn't have much fat, obviously I wasn't thick set, but my strength/endurance mix was way above average. So much of what heavier men often think of as muscle is just plain blubber.

Pedrosa is a small guy, I accept that...doesn't seem to hold him back, and riding moto gp bikes seems physically demanding.

These guys are in very good shape, they aren't going to break any power lifting records but have more than adequate strength for their needs. To be honest more "normal" people need to follow them, if you spend 80% of your life sitting at a desk you don't need to weight 75kg at 5' 8" to be functional and healthy.

They're endurance athletes, I bet some of them have to work harder than other to keep the weight down but if it was having a negative impact on their health they wouldn't be racing in F1 for a whole season.

I know that JB does a fair few triathlons; that he can do a triathlon in the first place is proof of his fitness levels. He was also the guest speaker at a corporate cycling event I attended last year, and he did say that he would have prefered to have been taking part than being driven from site to site.

Alonso also posts pictures of being out and about on both road and mountain bikes.
