Quite a lot of the information that the engineers give their drivers is derived from telemetry that the cars themselves gather. I wonder if teams will increase the amount of client-side processing of the telemetry so the cars can give drivers more information directly?

I like that you won't have drivers asking where there teammate is quicker in which corners as they are in the car...they can look at that during breaks in practice/qualifying, but still think drivers and teams need to talk about fuel, tyre life, brake balance/bias, energy recovery/harvesting etc.

Can see lots of teething problems with this.

The whole thing is pretty flawed anyway and paints a misleading picture.

We have things like Lewis being told to hang back and then apparently going for it. What actually happened is that we heard the time-delayed radio transmission of him being told, but not the subsequent conversation where Lewis and his engineer discussed it further and agreed he'd go for it. Net result is everyone going "huh huh huh, Lewis doesn't listen to his engineer". It's worse than useless to be honest. I don't actually think Team Radio adds much to things apart from confusion and misunderstanding for the viewer.

Although we do occasionally get little gems from the drivers.

Wasn't the first problem with team radio broadcasts that everyone was worried that the other teams would be listening in. They got around this when they realised that if they swore they couldn't be broadcast. So they all swore like sailors. Then FOM got themselves a bleep button. And they stopped their swearing.

I think it's just likely to mean that the drives will be issued with a code book for the weekend.

My read of it is the driver can still tell the team how the tyres feel, so the team can decide when to pit them, but the team can't give the driver any telemetry info?
Yep and I'm sure the driver can say things like "increase front wing and tyre pressures at the next stop" too.

Who actually asked for this ban?

Typical artificial entertainment being invented half way through a season yet again, what a joke of a sport this has become

Thread from 2 months ago about banning radio and telemetry:
http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a...

Here's a whole thread from 4 years ago about banning it:
http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?t=882...

Here's another thread where people want it:
http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a...

Here DrTre says they should ban it:
http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a...

I don't know why I humoured you anyway, you sound like the kind of person that would just complain regardless!

This is something that F1 fans have been asking for many years and finally we get it so we should be a bit more grateful smile

10 years ago the FIA's action on things like this that fans want was about as likely as a Taki Inoue comeback drive.

They could have someone appear on the pit wall with balloon pants on.

It's good that this is banned "any message that appears to be coded".

Reading further down, it seems that quite a lot is allowed though.

Looks like Hammer time is still allowed.

I am still not happy that matters relating to brakes overheating etc is not permitted, I can't help but think that is a safety issue.
