ETA: Wow they were lucky, its absolutely tipping it down there now, that would have made a real mess of quali had it been a little earlier.

Best qualifying session this year, got proper tense at the end.

Shame Kimi couldn't join in, he was definitely not impressed from his radio message.

Feel sorry for Grosjean, every time they get somewhere the car craps itself.

I'd love to know what distance on the track 0.007 is.

Gonna be a good race tomorrow.
I guess you saw the distance? Just a little less than the length of the front wing (i.e. going from front to back of the car).

On the bbc website Mercedes say 0.007 = 33.5cm

Did I hear the crowd cheer Ric, then not Ros, then again when Ham took the Pole?

Another class act by Ricciardo but less than 5 hundredth of a second between him and Vettel, so even coming from me, it looks like the two guys were pretty much level pegging this weekend so far.

Must be those pesky British fans ey Nico!? It's amazing he's put the boos so far down to 'British fans' - as though F1 fans the world over mustn't be in a position to dislike him / his driving.

In any case, for Lewis to screw up that corner so badly and still get pole; that seems astonishing to me and when I saw the lock up; I thought his chance at pole was dead in the water; just goes to show. Happy for DR, loved the way he was flying around the track; to me he actually had the car looking the most poised and seemed at one with the car.

Same here; I was absolutely astonished that he managed to snatch pole. When I saw the lockup I was expecting Lewis to come in at P3 or P4.

A cheer went up for all of them in the bay grandstand, each one progressively louder.

Some discussion on the Beeb about 3 car teams, Williams especially not keen.

I think they are missing a trick, they could put a female driver in the third car in each team so they can compete in a separate WWDC. Controversial I know, but every other sport I can think of offers a separate class for women.
There's no need for a seperate WWDC though. Girls package better, are generally a bit lighter and with the current crop of cars the issues previously with upper body strength etc. are no longer present. There are several female drivers now who could give the current field a run for their money.

You can't really blame him can you. We know he is proper quick - the team themselves said he was quicker than Kimi last year (when he was allowed).

What I don't understand is why the Renault engine/ERS system has more failures in the Lotus than the other Renault cars. I guess there is some issue(s) with the installation, cooling maybe ?fuel system ?

If we assume that the engines are the same then it has to be packaging. And, as you say, cooling has to be the prime suspect.

I don't think there are 8 women with F1 super licences?

Thanks for clarifying, I must have missed the Rosberg cheer (it didn't sound much on Sky F1 to me!).
