BBC seem pretty confident Alonso is off to Mclaren:

No one really knows do they? The media are just regurgitating old news with no further facts. Shoddy journalism with the nice big caveat of:

"Negotiations between Alonso and McLaren over the fine detail of his new contract are not completely finalised but insiders say they have gone so far that it would now be a major shock if the 33-year-old did not sign."

So it's close, really close and definitely going to happen but it might not. biggrin

What a garbage article. And as for this bit...

Benson said:
Alonso had been considering waiting to see whether an opportunity with world champions Mercedes might open up at the end of 2015 if negotiations with Lewis Hamilton over a new deal hit trouble, but appears to have decided against doing so while sitting on the sidelines.

Mercedes and Hamilton have both made it clear that their wish is to work together beyond the end of the world championship leader's current contract, which expires next year.

However, talks could hit trouble over Hamilton's salary - some insiders believe Mercedes will try to renegotiate it down from its current level of $31m (£19.4m) plus bonuses.
What does one imagine Alonso's salary demands are like?

FFS.

Given Button's rather snarky nature this weekend I think he's gone.

Yep I got the same impression too. Button has been treated quite badly really, he is underrated by almost everyone when he has actually done a very solid job of scoring points in a dog of a car these last couple of years.... even when he was teamed up with Lewis he was hardly blown away. I suspect a Button - Alonso line up would prove to be closer than a lot of people would expect (although I did think the same about the Raikkonen - Alonso match up). Kimi's performances have been so bad I wonder if he might get the boot and Button could go to Ferrari for a year or two?

I'd just really like some concrete announcements now. I think Button (and Magnussen) have been treated shabbily - yes, there is always specualtion and uncertainty, but it's now royally taking the p*&&. And Alonso's pronouncemnts on his future are just getting peculiar, even for his "samurai mindset".

Button's pit radio message was pretty sarcastic! hehe

Didn't Button outscore Hamilton in the years they were team mates?

I'd have thought he burnt 100 million bridges on his way out of McLaren.

Yet we all think Alonso going back to McLaren where he blackmailed Ron and set the team up for a $100M fine is perfectly understandable and likely to happen. biggrin

True JB contracts between BAR and Williams were awkward and Williams challenged him to honour his word. However let's not also forget that Williams have signed JB three times!

First in 2000 as a filler before Montoya's CART contract ended
Second in 2004 when with BAR although he ended up staying with BAR
Thirdly in 2006 also with BAR but then he backed out of the switch to Williams

So whilst it might be the a case of the straw that broke the camels back but you don't try to sign someone three times if you don't rate them.

That said I don't see JB at Williams.

Might be because over the last week or so F1 really is showing itself as a sport that is utterly, ruthlessly and apparently shamelessly self interested to the exclusion of any other considerations...

I suspect that if Ron has to take him back, it is at Honda's behest. And with the Honda $.

Alonso at McLaren will surely end in tears.

I wonder what Jenson has done to warrant this? smile

Absolutely. Which is why I don't see the previous contract history between Williams and Jenson being a barrier to him returning.

Not that I expected him to drive for Williams.

The only way I can see that happening is with both Bottas and Massa both moving on and Button and Nasr taking both seats. That seems such a fanciful stretch as to place it in the "never going to happen" pile.
