If that is true and I have read similar elsewhere, why the hell would Mclaren want him, he clearly doesn't want to go there for the long term, and if he did go there it would be a stop gap only until he can get into a Mercedes.

I sincerely hope that Alonso is without a drive next year.
The whole thing stinks. And the way McLaren are treating K-Mag and JB is particularly bad. Talk about stringing people along and making them feel second-best.

"Yeah, yeah, we might keep you. If we can't get someone better".
I am still struggling as to why after the very bitter split between the two they now want this slime ball back?? This whole sorry episode has set a new low in F1 for Mclaren.

Perhaps the boys don't fold their undercrackers neatly enough for Ron: http://articles.chicagotribune.com/2014-03-06/news...

"It’s easy to write a story saying ‘the deal is done’ but people in the know here in Interlagos say that Alonso hasn't signed the contract yet, he is waiting too.

Alonso at 33 knows that he needs to win another championship in the next two to three years and clearly Mercedes is the best place to be next year. He’s been waiting to see whether something might give in the Mercedes set up, but it has not happened.

Meanwhile he’s been playing hardball with Ferrari over the premature end of his contract, so that if he does end up sitting out 2015, he is at least collecting a significant sum of money while he does so."
mclaren hoping that the hona engine and next years car is good enough to make alonso want to stay. alonso then has the choice of staying in a good mclaren or moving to merc.

Why does Alonso think he will ever get a Mercedes seat? If Hamilton and Rosberg don't want to move I can't see them being pushed and in two years time he will be old news.

IIRC, Lauda said they were happy with Lewis but were going to leave negotiations till after the WDC so he can get on with the job in hand. Maybe Alonso's offered to drive for free (although wouldn't he need to be bought out of his Ferrari contract?), the gamble being that Lewis wouldn't take a massive pay cut and thus vacate the seat.

Still makes me wonder why on earth McLaren would want a driver who doesn't want them.

It's possible that Alonso's view of himself and the view taken by the rest of the world are no longer in alignment.

Pretty sure all of the drivers would take a pay cut to drive at a team with form like Mercedes. At the moment, if you drive for Mercedes you have an extremely high chance of being world champion. I'm sure LH would (and could) drive for free in Mercedes next year and go for another WDC.

I don't think Mercedes would willingly trade Hamilton for Alonso at any price. Hamilton is very popular in the team, and that includes Lauda and Wolff, and more importantly is getting the job done. They don't need Alonso, and is it worth potentially rocking the boat that much for the sake of a few measly million dollars? Driver salary is a relatively small percentage of that team's budget, especially compared to the marketing benefits of having a popular driver.

As well, Hamilton is a more marketable driver; by some margin VS Alonso... according to my mates mate who knows someone. Alonso money isn't worth the money / clout Mercedes would lose in letting Hamilton go. It seems Mercedes AMG F1 and Lewis alike; LOVE social media and are all over it. Lewis is an international star and it's doing wonders for Mercedes PR and exposure; especially in the USA.

I noticed the same, although there was also a lot of cheering for Nico which somewhat surprised me.

It seems pretty much every race except Spain is a 'home race' for him. It reminds me of Rossi in MotoGP in this respect.

For whatever reasons, Alonso has got it into his head that Hamilton will walk at the end of this season, hence the waiting.
It appears he has, and I think he is going to be badly disappointed. IMO Hamilton left McLaren for Mercedes to try and replicate what Schumacher did at Ferrari, build a team around himself and win, a lot...

A lot of people, including me, questioned the decision at the time. Fair play to the man, he make the right call.

I don't get the last sentence - my understanding is he was contracted to drive for Ferrari next season, and he was the one who wanted out, so I'm not sure what Alonso has to play hardball about.

Alonso has spent too long as president of his own fan club and now it is coming back to bite him on the arse. Alonso wants everything on his terms but as good as he is the big players are not keen to sign him under these conditions because of the reputation he has built up for being a destabilising force.... yeah he is fast but everywhere he goes trouble eventually follows.

Really says a lot for how much respect for Alonso Ferrari have when they are happy to let him go, keeping Raikkonen and signing Vettel as a replacement, despite their shockingly poor performances this year. I mean the waves Alonso creates in the team must be pretty massive to drown out his incredibly performances and undoubted ability on the track.

An insider tells me that when Hamilton said goodbye at McLaren, he also said "I'll be back".

It's baffling isn't it? Even if Lewis lost the WC through some epic balls up at AD he's not going to leave that team for a number of reasons. 1, they have the best car. 2, he'd have nowhere good to go.

He is the "special" one at Mercedes and will want to win a few championships there before he comes back.

So he signs an agreement with McLaren that, subject to performance clauses on their success in 2015, he might join in 2016. Maybe that's what Alonso is waiting to find out?

From a perspective of his contract with Ferrari if he hasn't yet resigned and Ferrari have actually signed Vettel then he's a very strong position to get Ferrari to pay him out of his contract.

Why miss out on a years pay?

I don't suppose Fakerari are going to lead the way with a 3 car team with Alonso, Raikonnen and Vettel as the driver line up?
3 World champions in one team is a hell of a headline.
