I suspect, if McLaren do actually wait until 1st Dec to announce next year's driver line-up, it is because the uppity Spaniard will not sign until he's seen the McLaren-Honda on track testing. Which is, what, next week?

I can't think of any other sensible reason.
LH NR talks are at the same time, No ?
It's got to be these two things together. If LH/NR stay put, then FA has no choice but to accept whatever McHonda deal is on the table. Otherwise he's got no top F1 drive next year.

Could it be that McLaren cannot offer the drive to Alonso until they have first offered it to Lewis?

Does Lewis have a pre-contract when McLaren change engine supplier?

McLaren and Alonso have agreed terms but both parties would rather be working with someone else.

Ron would rather have Lewis back and Alonso would rather try Mercedes.

Ron can't stand Alonso, would rather have the younger and faster Hamilton anyway, but will accept Alonso if there is no chance to re-sign Hamilton on a long term deal with Honda.

Both parties are hanging around on the off chance........Hamilton has all the keys.

"He brings with him that sense of team spirit which will prove invaluable when, together with Kimi, they tackle the challenges awaiting us, as we aim to be front runners again as soon as possible."
If that isn't a direct dig at Alonso then I don't know what is. Clearly Mattiacci felt Alonso was not a team player and was happy to show him the exit door. Makes you wonder why McLaren would want him vs Button really.

The one thing people forget with Ferrari this year is that it's a car designed solely around Alonso's requirements regarding feel, characteristics etc etc. Unless Kimi likes the car setup similar to Alonso he was always facing an uphill battle and him constantly struggling with the front end this year has proven that.

Alonso said yesterday: 'It was not a surprise for anybody what we announced today, and soon it will not be a surprise for anybody where I will go'.

So for f%^&'s sake, can Alonso or McLaren stop dicking their drivers and their fans around and announce it now, instead of "after [note, not "on"] December 1st"?

My wacky thought of the morning!

Could it be that Lewis has some sort of lifetime contract to Mclaren due to them having raised him from a child (in a sense). When he went to Merc, it was under some Mclaren terms that when he wins a WDC while driving for another team, they then have first dibs on him for the following season?

I reckon, from the way he looked incredibly uncomfortable when asked about having JB as a teammate, Alonso has something very directly to do with whether JB is retained or not.

If FA knows he's going to sign for McLaren, and genuinely wasn't fussed about Button as a teammate, he would've just brushed that question aside with a standard F1 driver media response.

And judging by Jenson's reaction he knows that Alonso knows it, knows that Jenson knows it and is at least a little uncomfortable with it, if not embarrassed, by it.

It will be a sad day if Jenson doesn't have an F1 drive but hopefully he has a great career ahead of him in other forms of motorsport and it would be fantastic to get him commentating in F1 especially if we can get him alongside DC - they's be very informative and fun. F1 needs more fun!

I think fans will be sadder than JB, tbh. He's been making "reconciled to it" noises for a long time, and there's no doubt that he has a great future still ahead of him, whatever he chooses to do.

And TBH, if you are a JB fan you can certainly follow him in whatever type of motorsport he moves to. It was interesting watching Mark Webber in a WEC race last week, looks very chilled at Porsche!!!

I can see JB mixing it with Maaark in WEC, and being a part-time pundit like Ant Davidson is for Sky F1.

I think Jenson would make an awesome pundit / analyst.

Yep I expect to see JB on the BBC as a pundit next season whilst racing in WEC or even Triathlons...

A MW/JB Team could just be the most chilled team ever!

In the odd occasion I've seen JB do a piece to camera, particularly when driving historic McLarens or somesuch, I've found him to be very articulate and entertaining - as he often is in interviews and on Top Gear and so on. I think he'd be a great pundit if he gives that a go.

The BBC commentary team doing the usual 'Alonso is a god' routine.
