I just watched that interview on BBC with Ron. As he points out, they know where they are weak and can do nothing about it, and they know where they are weak but can do something about.

He also pointed out that they [McLaren] don't believe you can win without being the works engine number one team. He said that was the significant reason to change.

I think McLaren will be back on form next year.

2016. 2015 will be a bedding-in year.

Absolutely right. Podiums all through 2015. Then the big silverware at the end of 2016. (fingers crossed)

Wasn't there a rumour of Gillette being McL title sponsors next season?

So much for Ron's "win win" when they became a mercedes customer team then.....

Already a sponsor of the team, doubt they will pay Ron's rate card for title, very few can afford that level.

Perhaps sponsorship is part of the reason for attempting to sign Alonso. Santander already sponsor McLaren, and already sponsor Alonso, so if you put it all together, Santander could become McLaren's new title sponsor.

You may be right about FA, but not JB. They'll retain KR to partner SV

Honda's 2009 car was pretty good.
With a dodgy double difuser and Merc engine.
Don't all teams try and bend the rules / find loop holes? Ross Brawn is an intelligent man, it wasn't his fault the rules were open to interpretation and that the other teams were slow to catch up.

If you're not cheating you're not trying hard enough.

Exploiting loopholes is not cheating until the loophole is clarified or closed...

Cheating is well policed. Smart engineers finding ambiguities in the rules due to the way they are written is fine.

Williams also had a double diffuser as did at least one other team (Toyota ?) Brawn / Honda did a better job of implementing it.

Cheating vs loopholes...One of Colin Chapman's favourite mantras was "rules are for the obedience of fools and the interpretation of wise men". F1 engineers are always pushing the boundaries of the rules to eke out every possible bit of performance.

I'm fairly certain that RD said several years ago that one of the intentions behind McLaren's move into road cars was to generate revenue to a level that would reduce the F1 team's reliance upon sponsorship.

Stands to reason as even without a title sponsorship they've said this season is one of their best funded.

That might have been one of the original thoughts behind the road car business but unfortunately it will not be providing the F1 team with funding to supplement their lack of sponsorship because:

1. the road car business has not been a financial success, and
2. McLaren don't actually own very much of their road car business (less than 4.5%).

that money comes from Honda, they got a $100m advance from Honda this season to build the 2015 car/hire staff for 2015. Honda want to hit the ground running.
