Probaly just after Hunt retired. I think the only British driver was Watson.
Well that's what happens when you have no British talent coming through...(looks at current GP3, GP2 champions)

I am a big Button fan and although I would like him to stay in Formula 1 next year I think it is best if he finishes and tries something else like WEC.I think there is only one person who has won two FIA world championships,Petter Solberg so it would be a good target for Button to spend the next few years in the WEC to try to become the second person and perhaps a Le Mans winner.
McLaren and Honda are hyping up their engine but I have a feeling they will be nowhere next year and if Marussia and Caterham are not there Mclaren could well be last in the championship and have a season like Lotus had last year.
Mercedes started developing their hybrid engine in 2010 so about three and a half years before the start of the 2014 season where as Honda have probably only started two years ago.Mercedes will be stronger next year so all their teams will beat McLaren including Lotus.Red Bull will be in the top three teams.Ferrari will be reasonably good and think Sauber and Toro Rosso will have reliability therefore pushing McLaren to last position.
I would not want to be Ron,Eric,Alonso and his team mate as they will have a nightmare and I have put a £100 bet on McLaren finishing last in the championship next year.
I really think that what I said above will happen but if Button is named as team mate to Alonso I will have to pray for a miracle and if Jenson wins the WDC I will be happy to lose my bet, perhaps not as 25k will come in handy.
Quoted for posterity and will refer back to this at this time next year.McLaren and Honda are hyping up their engine but I have a feeling they will be nowhere next year and if Marussia and Caterham are not there Mclaren could well be last in the championship and have a season like Lotus had last year.

Some bold claims there.
McLaren bottom of the table ?

It might be 2016 before McLaren benefit from their shakeup. McLaren had the best engine in 2014, and probably won't have the best engine next year. So I think they will likely be scrapping between 5th and 6th in the WCC again. Some bold claims there.

Red Bull finished with over twice the points of McLaren in 2014. How appalling was McLaren's performance in 2014 given their considerable resources, when they finished that far behind Red Bull with the best engine? Force India were not far behind McLaren, and their resources are nowhere near the level of McLaren.
Last in the WCC will be very hard to do with Caterham running their 2014 car (if they make it). It's a fair way back to Toro Rosso as well.

What is the situation here? Are there just not enough British billionaires willing to fund these guys? The pool of British talent seems to be immense, yet the grid next year is quite likely to have one Brit (who just so happens to be world champion). Sad state of affairs really. I can't see why Honda and McLaren wouldn't want to benefit from JB's wealth of experience, especially when it comes to working with Honda? I'm also surprised how little faith there appears to be (amongst those contributing to this thread) in Hondas ability to provide a top level engine. I think they'll surprise some folk and I certainly feel it's unlikely that McLaren will be bottom of the table.
JB is also immensely popular in Japan, so one would think Honda would be keen for him to stay also.

Maybe the data McLaren are waiting for are the results of the lie detector tests from Alonso to see if he actually has changed his views of McLaren since 2007.

I'll ask again (not you again, but another person making this claim)...can you provide a source for this? http://www.theguardian.com/sport/2012/oct/06/jenso...

I also had the good fortune to meet John Button and it he spoke of the great warmth that JB felt from his Japanese fans. I'm sure the fact that his long term Japanese girlfriend is so well known (and liked) is also an influence. I'm sure I also heard the various TV presenters talk about it at past Japanese GP.
I'm sure JB loves the place just when I see tv shots I don't get the impression he is supported more/less than any other driver. Ferrari drivers always have a big following. Lewis seems more popular than ever...even at places where he'd been boo'd in the past.

I really don't know why McLaren bother updating Facebook.
They posted 4 pictures of their new car up tonight, and got 79 responses, 78 saying keep Jenson and slagging off Ron, and one saying something along the lines of "hi my name is Ben, please send me a friend request"

I had to go back to the 19th of November to find a post where the last comment (the one that shows on the page) wasn't about keeping Button. They posted 4 pictures of their new car up tonight, and got 79 responses, 78 saying keep Jenson and slagging off Ron, and one saying something along the lines of "hi my name is Ben, please send me a friend request"
One of the best in the photos you are talking about is "If I knew what SAP made I'd boycott it"
