I'd rather not.

That's the stuff of nightmares.

As a Button fan since his test shootout for the Williams seat, I really hope this isn't his last year! But for me if Mclaren get Alonso it makes more sense to keep on KM. He is more the future of the team, and can iron out his minor indiscretions, while JB only has a few years left.

Not sure who I would support if JB does leave F1!

Points earn money at the end of the season. Qualifying high up the grid and then not getting the points for it doesnt earn money.

It would be a crime to get of JB over KM imo. KM should go to another team to learn his trade and then come back in at some point, but after a baron run of seasons of being also ran's, and with sponsorship money lacking, a business head would say that it necessary to speculate to accumulate, and the better McLaren do in the WCC the more chance they have of attracting better sponsor's who will pay money. Which pairing would you rather have in that instance? 2 ex WDC who are both likely to deliver points, or 1 ex WDC who will deliver points and a rookie who may or may not.

I'd take the former.

Mclaren get alot of stick for building poor cars for the last few seasons. The 2007 and 2008 cars were good, 2009 poor and then progressivly better until 2013 when another car was a poor performer. Whilst browsing some old Autosport magazines I found the launch for the 2013 Mclaren and on the front page of the mag a quote from Button - "the team have really listened to my direction"

Had a quick flick through and basically says with Hamilton leaving Button was able to have more input into the car than ever before . . . . . and it was a flop! Anyone remember in the middle of 2012 Jenson getting really lost with setup, burning out tyres and being 1 / 2 secs a lap off Hamilton? Maybe some of Mclarens problems are actually coming from Jenson because he is such a sensitive driver? From memory reading "The Brawn Story" book, Ross Brawn aknowledges several times Rubens ability to find settings that worked and Jenson would have them on his car as he could never get the car working for himself.

Also didn't earlier this year Jenson say he thought Mclaren should have a second more experienced driver to help with development? Maybe Jenson has been leading the team in the wrong direction all along and thinks the team could use another experienced driver to confirm what he is telling them?

Maybe Mclaren would benefit from a new team leading driver? Yes Jenson has had the better races and scored more points but so he should against a rookie if he's that good. K Mag has done ok I think and people saying qualifying speed is not important etc are wrong, it's easier to stop a guy that's fast from making mistakes / crashing than it is to make a guy who is slow but doesn't make mistakes / crashes go fast

does depend who they have eyes on for 2016. IF LH is being thought about JB for another year would be a safer option.

It's not over yet, but his options are very limited if Alonso does go to McLaren.

I wouldn't be surprised to see him end up in a Porsche LMP1 alongside his mate Webber.
Another big JB fan here. I'd love to see him in a Porsche LMP1 and I think he'd be good in sports cars. I think he has more left to give F1 but I think leaving McLaren would be the end of the line. I have a feeling with Alonso potentially inboard McLaren will keep KMag. He'll, they could drop both current drivers and put SvD in! If Honda were supplying another team towards the back of the grid (personally I think they are foolish not doing so) then JB could be kept for a couple,of years and KMag loaned out with the engine.

Who cares where KMag qualified. He has scored half the points of JB so far this season.
You could say that about anything:
Who cares about scoring points it's winning races that counts.
Who cares about winning races it's championships that count.

Qualifying performances indicate potential.
You do realise that teams are awarded money based on where they finish in the constructors table, yes?

Given how competitive a car is relative to other teams winning really is irrelevant in the middle and back of the grid - McLaren are racing Ferrari and Force India. Since qualifying doesn't get points, it is irrelevant.

And the result today proves my point - Button scores more points than Magnusson again.

Button did well today, early pit stop to inters, getting the McLaren up there. Meanwhile KMag had trouble staying on track pointing forwards. Honda, this is why he should stay.

I think Alonso would rather have Button as a team mate next year assuming he joins McLaren. He doesn't play well with young upstarts does he.

Magnussen is hardly a spring chicken in F1 terms, at 22 this weekend he is five full years older than Verstappen. There is so much talent (with a lot of money behind it) pushing up from the lower formulae that there really is little incentive to hang on to a driver unless they have proven that they can outperform the car.

Will he want to stay though if as suspected Alfonso has it written in his contract that he is numero uno there.
I suspect he'd stay if equal status, and walk away if he's told to be number 2.

I can't say I agree with this - what potential does it show exactly? That a guy/girl can run super fast over one lap with new tyres and little to no fuel in the car?

Unless you have a car, a la Mercedes, that seems to be streets ahead in almost any trim, then cars (and what can be extracted from them) will differ massively depending on how they have been set up. There are no points scored on a Saturday, JB sets his car up to maximise his chance of points on a Sunday, often to the detriment of qualifying performance, yes.

It will be a shame if McLaren dump him now through no fault of his own, as he is a truly excellent driver - some of McLaren's most stunning and/or dominant victories over recent years have been delivered by Mr Button. He finished 2012 on a high and should have carried massive momentum into 2013, but McLaren ballsed up in the design philosophy of the MP4-28 and are still paying for it now, although the MP4-29 is streets ahead.

For me, the best scenario would be to keep Kevin on the payroll but send him elsewhere for a year to learn his trade and improve his race craft, leave the development and set up of the new car and engine combo to the wily not-so-old foxes that are Fernando and Jenson.

Just my tuppence worth.
I'd agree with that.

I wonder how renewed talk of 3 car teams the possible demise of a a team or two will effect the current driver merry go round.

Surely too late to go 3 car teams for 2015? Alternative would be an F1 rookie class team using a purchased chassis and engine?

Great race by JB , used his head when others did not and showed his race craft to finish a very good 4th !!!
Alonso Button next year should be the McLaren line up !!! Let the rookie go , he proved today he is not up to the job !!
