Firstly, I am a JB. Moving on..

Even with JB, they have been very weak with sponsors, Hugo Boss, and Jonny Walker have gone.

With the Merc lump they have been poor.

As harsh as it sounds, they need Alonso (he brings major Spanish sponsorship, and at least in F1.motorsport circles, Global coverage).

They need Honda as well - they need Honda to out trump the mercs.

Having JB in the 2nd seat is almost irrelevant; might has well have a chump (KM), and Alonso to lead with Honda backing.

Will be great to see JB in WEC.
Except that chump has brought back a very meagre haul of points compared to Button, and as well as sponsors, every team needs prize money. Plus a higher finish in the Constructor's Championship means you are more attractive to sponsors.

'Massive' news would be a manufacturer.

Ferrari are rumoured.
Massive news could be that both Button and Alonso both have secured WEC drives and that leave McLaren without a "top" driver next season...

And yet...Ron Dennis, one of the most successful men in F1, with an infinitely more informed opinion on the matter than every single person on this thread, still can't seem to decide between a chump and Jenson Button.

Strange that, isn't it?

Yes, it is strange. Remind me when McLaren last won the Constructor's Championship?

OK, so he appears to be in desperate need of an experienced driver capable of bringing in a decent haul of points. And he's had one hanging on, getting more and more pissed off for months now.

Yet still no decison...

That's my queston: Why?

I'm not sure they ever have? My Granddad seems to recall that it happened but even his memory is a little hazy.

Regarding Mclaren's facebook page rofl! Talk about bad publicity, such a stupid ironic post to make. If they ditch Button for that snake Alonso, then their morals, dignity and self respect will be gone forever.

Absolute disgrace how they have treated their drivers.

Is that on the basis that this is Formula 1, where in order to compete you are required to check those in at the paddock entrance?

The sponsorship element is fairly credible I'd say. Could well be that if FA brings enough cash McLaren could afford to pay for JB. But if the FA deal is already done, I can't see what the hold up to that decision would be for McLaren. confused

McLaren are a race team - and are in it to win it (as opposed to survive).

Im sure if Ron can bag JB in the 2nd seat, he would.

But, and as everyone one else, can speculate, Alonso is his 1st priority drive wise.

Honda, Alonso and all the following sponsors are pretty much the slam dunk for Ron.

Ok no need to treat JB and KM like this, but welcome to the piranha club so to speak.

And yet it's been said Ron wants Magnussen but Bouillier wants Jenson?

If Ron was 100% on K-Mag, he would be fully sealed by now, like Alonso.

Its pretty obvious the 2nd seat is almost irrelevant - highest bidder etc gets it.

The team will now be focusing on Alonso.

Could we actually see a situation where Alonso and Button go elsewhere and McLaren don't end up with a "proven" driver?

I think there is a credible case for that arguably being what mclaren deserve after all this dicking about.

Brundle makes a good point and one I hadn't previously considered.

"McLaren’s procrastination is being interpreted as positive news for Button’s prospects given that keeping the younger and cheaper Magnussen is the more straightforward choice."

Also made me think... Santander is Alonso's main sponsor. Pretty big sponsor for Jenson too what with those god awful adverts.

Is the delay just trying to squeeze more out of Santander to pay for Jenson?

It's not just the paying for JB, it's the money that KM brings with him that needs replacing too (££££).

Hey, I like those ads. Anything that gets Jess on our screens is fine by me....hey, there's a thought...if the second seat is so unimportant let's get our Olympic Princess in F1. The press would go wild - 'brit female f1 drive' 'Olympic heroine' it's got it all.

I didnt think Magnussen brought that much, if anything? He's a McLaren development driver.
