Para 9 states that Jules hit his head on the UNDERSIDE of the plant. (Thus negating the driver cell altogether)
How is allowing a vehicle anywhere near a racetrack with that capability ever going to end well.
The answer is to slow the cars enough to stop the collision in the first place.

If the JCB/CAT had a solid skirt to prevent a car from going underneath it, it just transfers the impact to a different part of the car. In the Bianchi case he hit the vehicle squareish in the side and probably would have faired worse than he already had.
Who says it has to be solid, even if it was I'm guessing the deceleration would be less through the cell deformation than through a crash helmet.
In this case he would have glanced off btw.

This is the Jules Bianci Updates thread, there is already a thread elsewhere discussing the FIA panel's findings.

For some reason as Christmas draws closer, I've started to think a bit more about Jules and his family. I wish them all, all the best and hope some day to hear good news.

Latest news via Autosport.com:

"As we reach the conclusion of a difficult year for our family, we wanted to take this opportunity to provide a further update regarding Jules' medical situation, per our pledge to communicate continued information, when appropriate, to his many fans," the family statement said.

It was a significant and very comforting step for us to be able to bring Jules home to France last month, to continue his rehabilitation surrounded by his family and friends. This is very important for Jules and also for us.

Since that time, Jules has received the very best treatment in the Intensive Care Unit of Le Centre Hospitalier Universitaire de Nice (CHU) and now at the CHU's rehabilitation centre for this kind of trauma.

Jules' neurological status remains unchanged; he is unconscious but able to breathe unaided.

Whilst there is no significant information to report, we take a great deal of comfort from the fact that Jules continues to fight, as we knew he would, and this has enabled the medical professionals caring for him to commence the planned, but very painstaking, programme of rehabilitation therapy."

As we reflect on the events of the past few months, we would like to acknowledge once again the overwhelming warmth and affection shown towards our son," the statement continued.

These continue to be challenging times for our family, but the knowledge that he has touched the lives of so many people all around the world has helped us through.

We would also like to acknowledge the respect and support shown by the media towards our family during this time, for which we are extremely grateful.

We will continue to provide information when it is possible to do so and our sincere appreciation to everyone who continues to pray for Jules."

What does rehabilitation consist of for somebody in Jules' state?

To someone with little medical knowledge, it sounds positive, but reading that he's still unconscious doesn't sound so promising.

Fingers crossed that it means progress towards a meaningful recovery.

Breathing unaided is at least a start. I hope that it is a promising sign.

I would suggest rehab at this stage consists of sensory stimulus and touch, seeking some positive reaction from Jules.

It's a horrible situation and I'll certainly be raising a glass or two for Jules and Micheal tonight. Here's hoping for some positive news in the new year.

Humm, I'm not sure that no news = good news in this case.

FFS why?

We have no "right" to any information. Why do you think they owe us an update? Do you not think they would be sharing any news if they had some?

Leave them alone on this topic and watch the racing.

And another Echo.

Perhaps I have been in and around the sport too long and am a bit of an emotional retard but whilst it is very sad and distressing to know that a driver has been injured so terribly it is frankly none of our business and we have no right to know anything about their condition.

To expect Manor to update us is also well off the pace. Yes he was driving one of their cars, but that is where it ends. It is for his family, if they see fit, to tell us as, when and if they see fit.

Just to put this into perspective there is a driver who is/has been driving in a top UK series despite having had a horrific crash after which they were advised absolutely not to get in a race car again by doctors (a la Dario Franchitti). I know quite a lot about it all (hence I know what the doctors said) and was rather set aback knowing what I know about the back story to find out that they were racing again. Know what? It's none of my bloody business so long as the MSA are happy and the driver can live with the potential implications of their decision. It's their life and their family, not mine.

At first I was shocked at some of the responses but yes ok. I didn't look at it from that point of view. I'm just desperate to hear good news I guess and forcing the matter isn't going to bring that on any quicker anyway. Sorry if I upset anyone with my earlier comment. I will just wait.

It's on multiple sources in the French version, an interview with his dad.

http://www.varmatin.com/derniere-minute/philippe-b...

Google translate is pretty accurate:

Between visits to the hospital, Philippe Bianchi evokes poignant words the fight of his son still in a coma six months after the accident at Suzuka.
Just over six months after that damned Sunday, October 5, 2014 when his son's life champion rolled over into another dimension in Suzuka, he decided to speak "out of respect for all the people who daily continue to send Jules beautiful testimonies of affection encouragement. "
Since the crash of the Japanese Grand Prix, Philip Bianchi spoke publicly that three or four times. Yesterday morning inclusive.
There, at home, on the heights of Roquebrune-Cap-Martin, in his living room where enthroned a shiny helmet and a lithograph depicting one of those memorable days of glory, the title of European Champion Formula 3 won Dijon in 2009, simply gaze. Often fogged.
Listen to his words. Silences, too. And is then measured at full speed the magnitude of the evils that beset him.
Father Marussia driver still in hospital in Nice, still in a coma, is a wounded man.
Injured but not broken, because the fight continues. With full courage and hope pinned to the body ...
Philippe Bianchi, first, what can you say about the situation of Julius today?
The only thing we can say is that he fights with force, as it has always fought before and after the accident. Every day, Jules doing a marathon. From a medical point of view, his condition is stable. It is fairly autonomous. No physical problem. All his organs are working without assistance. But for now, it remains unconscious, in a coma.
The Nice neurosurgeons who care for them have they seen progress?
For this kind of trauma, as we know, evolution is very slow. Compared to what we said the Japanese professor who was immediately operated in Yokkaichi, this is already the day and night. There, when we arrived, with mom Jules, there was no hope. The prognosis was alarmist. There was talk of irreversible damage. On the one year period at least before the transfer, which was finally done after seven weeks, as he quickly could breathe again on his own.
And now?
Neurologically, the doctors told us that there is no specific intervention to do. Most importantly, to stimulate Jules is that it feels a constant presence at his side. That's why we take turns every day, her mother, her sister, her brother and me. It also has it, Gina, the German girlfriend Jules, who lives here now.
What are your reasons for hope?
Jules is young. He is 25 years old. He is very strong physically as he survived such a shock ("G 93") (emotion interrupting) You know, I'm very proud of Jules. I have always been, but there ... (another pause) It's a fking job. He says. So we hope a new development. The next, it would be asking the coma. From time to time, at his bedside, we see that things are happening. At times, it is more "active", it moves more, his hand shakes our ... But is it mere reflex reactions or real? Hard to know. The important thing is that it is followed by excellent specialists. And near his. If he left the CHU Saint Roch, remains hospitalized in Nice.
How your family does through this ordeal?
Our universe collapsed on 5 October 2014. Before, even if it was running constantly over hill and dale, we communicated daily, orally or by text. And here, in a split second, everything collapses. The questions that nobody can answer replace life projects. Will he make it? If so, will he disabled or can he live normally? In short, this type of accident, I think it hits more than a real death. Suffering is relentless. A daily torture. We send him our love, that of all the people who send him messages. And he, in return, he gives us energy, envy, what continue to fight alongside him.
Support brands keep coming ...
Those people who think of him, praying for him, it is a fabulous motivator. Sure Jules hears! Today I want to again thank them all. And tell them that we will give news when there will be good or bad.
Grand Prix 2015, you follow the near or far?
I keep myself informed without watching TV. Flip on karting circuits where I take care of two hopes, it revives in me already a lot of memories hard to bear ... Maybe I'll go to Monaco to watch the Formula I race (electric cars, ed) The F1 Grand Prix, however, it is not expected. Although many drivers and teams responsible for often think Jules, I do not feel able to plunge into the atmosphere.
Four months after the official investigation of the FIA whose findings have pointed to the excessive speed of Jules regime under yellow flags ...
(It cuts) It was an internal investigation. It engages only those who initiate. Regarding this, I have nothing new to say. Very good people involved at this time to defend the interests of Julius. If a manager is appointed one day he will have to pay. I, frankly I'm too upset to talk about this. My energy, I prefer to focus on Jules.

Very sad situation.

Good of him to update the world, but a shame there is nothing more positive. Fingers crossed he comes out of the coma in the not too distant future.

Indeed. Thanks for posting, I was thinking of Jules today while watching the Chinese GP, thinking it had been a while since there had been any update in the media.

Hopefully he will regain consciousness, but reading the translated interview with his father it doesn't sound like he (the father) is optimistic.
