My old man reckons Marc Marquez will be driving for Honda F1, either for McLaren or Honda directly in 2016 once he's won 3 MotoGP championships...

Any substance to this?

I guess in his version of events, it'll depend on Marquez winning next year as well... Highly possible given his winning streak this year.

And he's certainly young enough!

Nope.

Test drive yes, for column inches and news video it might generate, I expect the flirtation with it will be frequent just like Rossi.

Recent talk on here of the achievement if Button, as a former WDC, moved to WEC and won Le Mans. This and the WDC/Indy 500 are great cross disciplinary milestones but I think a modern Surtees is the holy grail of true greatness.

I think the transition from 4 wheel world champion to 2 wheel is far less likely than the converse which would be even harder now than in Surtees' era. Marquez is probably the only person currently that might be able to do so and the Honda tie-up would be massively impressive in marketing terms if he did do it. It will be a matter of right person, right time and will depend on how competitive Honda are on their return.

Would his success on two wheels have any bearing on needing a super licence?

He wouldn't qualify for a Super Licence without doing some other car racing first, unless they would award it based under 5.1.2(f) after some car test sessions with a special dispensation for the change of discipline:

FIA International Sporting Code Appendix L said:
5. Qualification and conditions of issue for the Super LicenceThe FIA Formula One Driver Super Licence is issued by the FIA.

5.1 Qualifications

5.1.1 The driver must be the holder of a current FIA International Grade A licence.

5.1.2 The driver must also satisfy at least one of the following requirements:

a) have made at least 5 starts in races counting for the FIA Formula One World Championship for Drivers the previous year, or at least 15 starts within the previous 3 years.
b) have previously held the Super Licence and have been the regular test driver with an F1 World Championship team for the previous year.
c) have been classified, within the previous 2 years, in the first 3 of the final classification of: the F2 Championship, or the International F3 Trophy, or the GP2 Series, or the GP2 Asia Series or the Japanese F/Nippon Championship,
d) have been classified in the first 4 of the final classification of the Indycar IRL series within the previous 2 years,
e) be the current champion of one of the following:- Formula 3 Euro Series- The principal national F3 championships of: Great Britain, Italy, Japan, Spain- World Series F/Renault V6N.B.: the title of Champion is considered valid for 12 months from the last race of the relevant series or championship season.
f) be judged by the FIA to have consistently demonstrated outstanding ability in single-seater formula cars, but with no opportunity to qualify under any of c) to e) above. In this case the F1 team concerned must show that the applicant has driven at least 300 km in a current Formula One car consistently at racing speeds, over a maximum period of 2 days, completed not more than 90 days prior to the application and certified by the ASN of the country in which the test took place.

Has he ever driven a car fast? Or driven a fast car, single seater, touring car, rally anything?

What an odd thing to think and definitely a load of bks. Unless your old man has contacts with Marquez.

Skil set required to be a top motogp rider would exceed an F1 drivers in my opinion......and I could see someone going from motogp to f1 but not the other way.

^ this. What col68 says, I think any MotoGP rider could step in to a F1 car and be fast, let's face it, it's much less physical than 45 minutes on a 260bhp lightweight bike! Speed and acceleration isn't the problem, it'd just be getting the feeling for down force, but having gone sideways on a bike at 150mph I'm sure they'd have the feeling.

He would be then the second person to have won both, some achievement! Hell, he'd probably be young enough to get back to MotoGP afterwards ;-)

It's just paddock rumours from what I can tell, and he's been asking rossi about his F1 experience...

Would be nice but if Loeb couldn't get a super license Marquez has no chance.

Whilst it would be great to see, and I'm sure he'd be quick, I hope he stays in MotoGP for a while yet.

Simply to see more of this:

As above, I think any of the motoGP boys could make the move & be successful, which is a shame if you think about it.

F1 should be the pinicle, the toughest of the tough with the worlds best drivers. As it currently is, I suspect with a bit of practice we could all make a reasonable stab at it!
