Button v Alonso

So basically Button needs the car to be perfectly to his liking (a la Vettel & Raikkonen). If the car is too his liking then he is good enough to compete with Alonso, but if the car is weak at the front or twitchy at the rear he will get smoked. Basically the same scenario we have just seen played out at Ferrari this year, and that didn't go well for Kimi.... So depending on what kind of car Mclaren produce next year we will all be talking about Jenson as the most under or over rated driver of all time.

I thought I read somewhere it's a one year deal with an option for 2016 (presumably the option being on McLaren's side), which means we could be resurrecting the old thread again next autumn...

Yes but let's hope we don't need to resurrect the thread next autumn!I thought I read somewhere it's a one year deal with an option for 2016 (presumably the option being on McLaren's side), which means we could be resurrecting the old thread again next autumn...

Would be great to see Button beat Teflonso next year or I'll settle for Hamilton to steal the title from Fred's nose like Vettel did in 2010. That was pure comedy gold.
& we'll see FA back at his 2007 antics again, although this time with no sweet deal from Renault or Fezza to tale hm back after he's burnt his Macca bridges (again). I don't fully buy the jenson-can-only-drive-a-good-car bit. He's had a few capable teammates and none as I recall have shown him their heels? In fact it might surprise you to learn, over their 3 seasons together he even out-pointed hamilton!
I think he'll be right there with alonso, and he also has a stronger head IMO which could tip it in his favour if it comes down to mind games and dirty tricks.

Given how the plan is to have FA there for at least two seasons, it doesn't take a rocket scientist to work out that the car will be biased towards him. As everyone knows JB's driving style etc, I don't think too many people will think much different of him if he doesn't compete with FA this coming season. What I think may happen is that JB will adapt his driving style a little and will learn something of FA's style to drag the car around. At least that is a hope anyway.
It doesn't make sense to me for a team to knowingly build a car that doesn't suit one of their drivers, who they are paying several million pounds to drive. If the car is good and well balanced enough for JB to be quick in it then FA will also be quick in it. It doesn't make any sense to go off on another tangent just for one of the drivers knowing that the other will likely struggle. The teams want to win the WCC just as much as, if not more than, the WDC so they need both drivers to perform.
If the car is another complete donkey then I think FA will come out on top, but if they can reproduce their form of 2012 then it could be an epic battle.

I wonder if Jenson, given his age and life experience will get some tutoring from someone like Rob Wilson so he can feel more at home and confident when the car isn't exactly to his liking?
I'd like to see someone ask Ron Dennis whether Alonso has clear number 1 status? Would the sponsors that Alonso brings be able to stipulate that?

Without any testing yet the car will not be set up to suit one driver or the other yet.
I think LFC was referring to primary design of the car and not set up.Gassing Station | Formula 1 | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
