I was listening to the latest Motor Sport podcast with David Brabham and they talked a bit about him.

I must confess that I know very little about him. What are people's thoughts him and his racing career as a whole?

Did Motor Sport magazine do a 'Lunch With' piece on him about 18 months ago? Seemed an interesting person, his own man. I think they said at the time that he'd make a good podcast guest, but it wouldn't be an easy task getting him to do it.

See link below... the full article is excellent. I still remember a very cool Sauber from Silverstone in '87, so glad he's part of my motorsport history..

Good enough to have been one of the very best. Quickly became disillusioned with the bullst surrounding F1. Had a huge accident and suffered injuries not dissimilar to Massa. Found that he had to try to drive fast, rather than just doing it (similar to Moss post accident). Went away from motorsport and enjoyed his life.

Work noting that Jonathan Palmer only really won the 1983 F2 title after Thackwell came back from injury and acted as a rear gunner.

In a different league to Palmer!

Silverstone, early 80s, spring, pissing it down = Thackwell driving away from everybody else. Those piss wet through early season visits to Silverstone gave me a life long aversion to the place! Thackwell was the quickest bloke I ever saw in an F2 car though - outstanding driver, but very much an "on my own terms" guy.

A very interesting guy who gave it all up and now teaches. Sublime talent and to nearly everybody around at the time it was clear he was going to win Grands Prix .

hmmm
??

It was my post you just commented on and I must admit to being confused by your reply. Would you care to expand on your rather limited thought?
