Still only 5 laps for McL...that's now almost 4 full days and a winter break and some fundamentals not working. Not great signs.
To miss this much running has to be a serious cock up by the team/Honda, there is so little testing allowed they already in deep trouble if it wont run right, zero competitive laps, no distance runs, shambles.

And yet Red Bull/Renault turned it round last year.

They had a dodgy engine though not a completely new one.

You'd think they'd be a bit further along than this though!

Oh goodie, Ted is doing a piece for his Notepad segment about nose cones using a plastic beaker, packet of jam and a cereal box.

Pat Symonds is looking confused!!
Who can forget his new engine parts demo in front of a rather baffled engineer from last year?

Ted asks Pat about how he designs the nose whilst holding said breakfast items - cereal box, plastic cup, and packet of jam.
PAT: "Well, we use a CAD system, we don't actually use packets of jam."

And they had not tried to run it unsuccessfully in the final test in 2013.

I hoped that this very poor level of performance might have been ruled out by the test last year. It does not bode well, when Merc can reel off laps for fun.

iirc this engine is NOT the 2015 race engine, nor will the next engine be in the car for the 1st race.

Yes but it's not going to be be a special one off engine just for this test which is completely different , it will be fundamentally similar. Two days testing before xmas and the winter they should have hit the test running!! Milage is so important, they cannot review anything if it is sat in the garage. Before anyone says it happen last year Rb etc, this is different.

I really want to see Mcl do well just disheartened.

Sounds like they've written off 2015 already as a development year.

I think they'd be foolish to think they can compete with a new engine provider and Mercedes doing what they're doing. They are probably just hoping to be up there by the end of this year at the moment.

They have been saying it will be a development for a while now so no great change this week.

If the engine contains new technologies that are giving them these issues then it's a terrible decision to implement them. If they knew these problems were coming, what on earth were they playing at with the massive "new era" and #makehistory marketing campaign? If you knew it was going to be this bad, wouldn't you stfu and keep your heads down? It's the same old McLaren over-complicating things. It's like the exhaust integrated into the floor that kept burning the car. They spent days and days chasing that and fked the whole test up.

Trying to run before they can walk - again!

I wonder if McLaren have been a bit too ambitious with the whole "#SizeZeroCar" for the first year/test with a brand new engine - The rear of the car is very tight, which reportedly slows the guys down fixing things/

No, you'd go testing and iron out the issues.
That's why it's called 'testing'.

Honda can only make reliability changes. So throw everything on it. Then upgrade it later for reliability reasons.

The age old maxim is that it's better to try and make a fast car reliable than a reliable car fast.

However, it's yet to be seen if the McLaren is actually fast.
