Hamilton's refusal to dress like a rich little white kid really does wind some people up. None of this would be gossip-worthy if he were, say, a football or basketball player.

Hamilton's attempts to look not look like a rich little kid are the amusing thing. He's not from the Ghetto, he's from a very well to do family background. It really has nothing to do with the pigment of his skin - but rather that Lewis is promoting himself as a style icon etc - he's put himself on a pedestal for it, and it's natural people will make fun in return. It's only fair - if Peter Andre, Scott Alexander or Jordan wore such god awful attempts at some sort of gold dog lead as a BA Baracus type chain, they'd be quite rightfully mocked - you don't get a free pass for being a good driver.

PS - I only linked the article in the first place because of the amusing way they described just how dull this season is so far. If he has really had a hair transplant, it's funny but still not a thatch on Eddie Jordan.

Not sure how you define well-to-do, but I've never thought a Stevenage council estate to be a particular signifier of wealth.

Karting costs thousands to do. Karting at the front of the grid many, many thousands.

How many skint people can spend a significant amount of money on a hobby? I know this is PH where incomes seemingly ignore the bell curve altogether - but you're being daft.

As an aside, if it were actually true that he was properly skint, eating netto crisps in front of his Brightouse 50" telly bought with benefits money - would it excuse that chain?

It's up to him - I wouldn't wear it. Would you be surprised to see someone from a more socioeconomically diverse sport wearing it?

Only one with strong necks. Footballers love a bit of bling, but even that tt down the road with the silver SLS couldn't carry that =)

to be fair Anthony had to remortgage his house to keep Lewis in karting.....im sure they had some money, you don't go far without it, but its not like he had a rich upbringing.....

Back to the theme of the thread . . .

Lewis looks to be unstoppable right now, and it must be nigh on impossible for Nico not to be resentful.
Nico has seemingly also lost his edge in qualifying which may return of course but as each race goes by, it must become harder and harder for him. And so any driver in Nico's shoes. . . a'la Webber / Vettel situation.

Of course there can only be one winner and right now it doesn't look like Nico is going to get a win on merit, but who knows. He went pretty well in Bahrain last year. . .could this be the race that brings him back ?

The chain - as you say, it's an aside. I think it looks daft, but them I'm of a different age, ethnicity and demographic; I'd imagine Lewis would feel as uncomfortable with my Barbour jacket as I'd be with his chain.

Regarding his wealth or otherwise, I recall him saying in an interview that he used to get sent off to a race meeting with packets of sandwiches, and that he and his father had to sleep in the car. His dad got a 3rd job at one point which meant they could afford to buy new tyres for the kart.

No, not breadline stuff, but certainly not a comfortable middle class upbringing.

Lewis Hamilton said:
“My Dad said in the first year we spent £20,000. He put my step-mum’s life savings, his life savings and re-mortgaged the house just for that year,” he added

“It’s a huge gamble and it’s a huge commitment. A lot of people do that and don’t get the end result I did.

“My Dad and Linda just gave up their idea of going shopping and getting things like nice new clothes and all the things women do, to keep me racing.

“She would be in the back of this box trailer next to a gas fire sitting with my brother on her lap, and a pot of Noor chicken noodle. It was the best. We had it every race weekend.”

I asked if he realised at the time, the scale of the gamble.

“I was eight. I didn’t know what money was. I found some money under the counter at the store a couple times and I would use it to buy sweets!”

What has what he wears got to do with whether he has a psychological advantage over his team mate?

Personally I think half of the battle is that Nico knows he can't easily overtake Lewis on track nor stay in front of him as a rule...

Nico is looking pretty broken so far, and we're only 3 races in. Hopefully he will get his mojo back or the season will be pretty boring.
I think the season will be great, Hamilton on his way to a 3rd championship and plenty of racing behind as Vettel and Raikkonen jostle with Rosberg for 2nd place. Further back there's young Max Verstappen to add excitement as he continues to show how easy overtaking is and of course Alonso and Button carving their way back from the back so to speak!

1st race was crap, and so was the last one, barring, as you say, Verstappen and Button (loved DC's comment - this amount of telly coverage would be great for McL's sponsors.......if they had any!!).

I hope Vettel can make some progress or Nico can get his qualifying mojo back. No problem with LH taking his 3rd WDC, but I genuinely hope he doesn't dominate at a time when the sport is a bit short on thrills anyway.

Nico does seem to be moaning a bit too much, but if the places were switched I think Lewis would be just as bad.
I agree.

Nico has lost his mojo and is a beaten man, he has not got over last season and has still never taken Lewis in race proper, he has the look of a man who thought he could compete with his team mate but now knows he cannot. He thought that because he gave Shoomi a run for his money he would do the same or better with Lewis, now shot to bits.

Nico will be replaced by a fast young speedster next year, Merc need two front line drivers.

A free pass to where? Or for what?

I follow your earlier train of thought, roughly, but I'm lost here.

Agree with most of that. Nico's trump card is he is German. He's lucky Vettel went to Ferrari!
