I've just caught up with the Qualifying and well done to Hamilton for another personal record and stonking lap. Rosberg is truly broken.

Anyway, in the post chat with Lauda and Ted, yet another quip was made about Hamilton still not having a signed contract.

Lauda said something like "It's a pity that Nico couldn't take it, for Mercedes anyway". Does it annoy him that there is a British driver running all over the top of a German?

From memory that was about Nico coming third, rather than second. Not about beating Lewis for pole.

Ah, maybe. I might have mis-heard that.

It is quite the opposite IMHO. Lewis is a racing driver, as in go fast as f**k and overtake. Lauda loves him for it.

Fair do's. Will teach me to jump to conclusions! smile

But, what do we think is holding the contract up?

My guess would be Merc want Lewis to do a lot of promotional s***te which he is not too keen on. So trying to get that reduced. I doubt the payment etc is a huge issue, frankly I think Lauda would pay whatever he was asking (which is plainly going to be more than Nico!).. He may even want things like last years car - I know I would!

The team and driver are busy with prep for back to back races. The contract can wait a week or two...

Perhaps?

Have you ever signed any commercial contracts that require lawyers? Even with both parties keen to commit it can take months.

You're paying your legal team extremely good money to look after you interests should the worst ever happen. Re-writes can and do take up a lot of time, sometimes for the silliest of reasons but your legal team wouldn't be doing their job if they didn't get these things sorted.

Personally, I don't see it as anything more than that.

Niki Lauda is Austrian, why would he care?

No offense- Are you quite recent to F1? like said lauda loves hamilton. toto the boss man, perhaps, would prefer a nice loyal manageable company man driver in front for them - (thats not to infer anything untoward going on though)

lewis is probably the biggest star in F1 right now, at his peak, and his contract is going to be a serious one, and like said they're negotiating it with 80% of the current contracted season to go, compared with seb and alonsos contracts being tied up so late last year it's really a mountain being made of a molehill by the media.

None taken. I'm not new to F1 but will admit (which seems clear now) that i'm not au fait with the movers and shakers at the top.

It was just that one convo that struck me as maybe being a bit disappointed that Nico didn't get pole but that's since been clarified.

F1 is, I would content, the sport most devoid of any nationalistic allegiance. All teams, all team owners, managers and investors want a driver in their car that will win races and championships. Where those drivers come from is of no importance.

There are times when a driver from a certain country is desired by a sponsor but these are rarely the sort of drivers that amount to much.

And let it not be forgot that Lauda is in fact Austrian and most Austrians that I've met have the same degree of affinity with Germany as we do.

And let it not be forgot that it was Lauda that fought tooth and nail to get Hamilton to come to Mercedes.

Personality doesn't win championships. I have no live for Hamilton at all, I think he's a prat, but put him in a competitive car and he'll win. I'd employ him on that basis.

Have to agree; looks a prat with his gold chains and ear studs, but brilliant driver none the less.

It was the interview today alongside Vettel. Most inspirational person you've met, Vettel...mum and dad, Hamilton...queen and Nelson Mandela.

All about the image.

Have to agree about the "Inspirational people" bit, but did Vettel never get told at school to sit up straight? Slouched in his chair like that is a poor image IMHO, but maybe that's because I'm an old git with standards, (no matter how low they may be)

Merc actually have something of a love in with British GP drivers.

Ran Dick Seaman in the pre war era.
Moss with Fangio.
Hamilton as soon as they could get their hands on him.

Merc will always try and run a British driver if they can.

'met' being the operative word in the question that was asked. Your memory is obviously a little hazy with what was said, go watch the interview again.
