Putzing around on YouTube listening to videos of Ferrari V12s and I come across this:

https://youtu.be/5SoZiTxdQyw

Ferrari V12 from their 1995 F1 machine. That is absolutely glorious. Its a rich, multifaceted sound and as it comes toward you, you do feel like something almighty is bearing down in you.

Great sound, and quite a pretty car as well in my view. I'd like a compromise in F1 - aero that looks this simple, with engines that sound like this, even if there is some artificial hacking to get there.

That sound is glorious.

We need this back in F1.

This is why I love the Ferrari Racing Days at Silverstone - the noise.

Utterly superb. You can stand at Copse & listen to the V10's as they scream around Silverstone.

Nothing but V10's.

Nothing but shear joy listening to the cars at full speed.

More please.

Tell me more about these days please! If any are coming up I'd love to know so I can attend.

Brands Hatch has something you might enjoy....
4 MAY 2015
MASTERS HISTORIC FESTIVAL - BRANDS HATCH (GP)

INFORMATION
The Masters Historic Festival returns to Brands Hatch for its traditional Bank Holiday weekend of classic racing action.

The FIA Masters Historic Formula One Championship features a packed grid of normally-aspirated Grand Prix cars raced during the 60s, 70 and 80s, including stirring machinery from Williams, McLaren, Lotus, Tyrrell, Arrows and more.

The FIA Masters Historic Sports Carsrecalls a golden era of endurance racing, featuring some of the most beautiful race machines ever built. Expect to see Lola T70s and Ford GT40s bringing a flavour of Le Mans to the venue.

This year's event will also feature the Super Touring Car Trophy for machines from 1970 to 1999, including the Super Touring Cars that saw the BTCC surge in popularity in the 1990s, with the cars running exactly as they did in period.

On the fabulous Grand Prix Circuit, spectators will be able to see these priceless examples pushed to the limit on a fast and flowing course that has changed little over the years.

In addition to support races featuring monstrous sportscars and saloons, a number of other iconic F1 machines across all eras will be on display. Please see our "What's Racing" section below for more on the support races

I used to have that Ferrari sound as my launch sound on Windows 95.

I doubt I would think of using a current Merc engine now, or Windows come to think of it.

Thanks to the OP so much for posting. I had forgotten just how special those cars sounded. Not really a fan of going back to "the good old days" but it would be great to hear F1 sounding like that again rather than the current "Volvo estate" sound. The cars also look so much better and the steering wheel looks like a steering wheel should. The sound as they change down going into a bend is something really special. Thanks again!

I actually saw those Ferraris racing at Imola in 1995. In the flesh the sound was visceral. The noise of the gear changes was like a shotgun going off.

Awesome - pretty much the best sound and looks of Modern F1.

Much as I agree with the sound, sadly we are all getting old and 1995 is now "historic F1"... 20 years ago, etc.

Why do I call it historic? At least one driver wasn't born when that car raced and a couple were only babies...

Yeah - I did think a bit when I was going to classify it as modern.

I think it's more the car design than anything else and I was sort of thinking that coherent and working Aero was as good as any watermark I could think of.

Fundamentally, today's F1 cars share the same DNA as the mid 90's cars, whereas I don't think that when we go back to the 70's where Aero was still very much in it's fledgling state.

Fair point. I see it as eras through my own personal lens of the drivers rather than the cars I followed closely (so not all WDCs) and more about who is still racing

80's - Mansell, Prost, Senna, Piquet (historic)
90's - Senna, Schumacher, Hakkinnen (ageing, not quite historic)
00's - Schumacher, Alonso, Button (modern)
10's - Vettel (modern)

OP you are right. I don't think I have ever moaned about the current F1 noise but there is certainly a visceral element missing from the spectator's experience.
Hearing those old ones echo around the streets of Monaco or scream under a pedestrian bridge you happen to be walking over is an experience I hope has not gone. They gave you goose bumps.

Doesn't even have to be old ones. I stood next to a recent 2.4 v8 when it was fired up and it was pretty awesome... sort of echoes through your body.

Fair point too - I hadn't thought about it like that, but you're right - I think the 'eras' are more to do with the drivers than the cars - but there's probably only four real types of cars - of course in my own humble opinion.

A)The front-engined mahoosive cars from before the 60's
B)The mid-engine revolution of the 60's including the early 70's 'Aero' experiments (which were often just the late 60's cars with stuff bolted on).
C) Early-mid 70's to early 80's cars which started to really bring on Aero but with non of the later sophistication - there were loads of wacky designs trying to work out what was the best solution...
D) Early 80's onwards. These were the first 'Modern' cars for me.

Again, just a personal reflection of mine.

I honestly thought the V8's weren't particularly tuneful. Loud yes, but in a way that became grating. The 10's are piercing but the 12's are where its at, loud, but not harsh....much more operatic.

That is incredible. Brings back memories of watch F1 when I was younger. The new stuff isn't a patch on that.

This is the sole reason I'd never, ever go to a current F1 race or test session - having experienced that kind of sound for so many years...what's the point? It made F1 unique.
